The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting for a Fishery Biologist 2 located in Kodiak, Alaska!

What you will be doing:

This position serves as the Assistant Area Management Biologist for the North Alaska Peninsula and supports management of commercial salmon and herring fisheries. The position is based full time in Kodiak, Alaska, and seasonally in Port Moller, Alaska, from May through August. The incumbent’s primary responsibility is serving as project leader for two floating weirs and one rigid weir on the Ilnik, Bear, and Nelson rivers.

This role also includes supervising, training, and directing a seasonal biologist and seasonal fish and wildlife technicians.

Key responsibilities of the Assistant Area Management Biologist include:
  • Directly supervising one biologist and up to six seasonal technicians.
  • Developing and leading multiple salmon population monitoring projects.
  • Assisting the Area Management Biologist with management of commercial salmon and herring fisheries.
  • Conducting aerial surveys to assess salmon abundance.
  • Attending Board of Fisheries and local Advisory Committee meetings.
  • Communicating and interacting with state, federal, and stakeholder entities.
  • Writing operational plans, reports, and technical manuscripts.
  • Training staff in firearms use, bear awareness, and field and vessel safety.
  • Overseeing maintenance of remote field camps, structures, outboards, and ATVs.

The working conditions you can expect:

This position is based in Port Moller from approximately May 20 through September 1 and in Kodiak for the remainder of the year. During the summer field season, the incumbent oversees operations at three remote salmon weirs that provide daily escapement data, conducts aerial surveys as needed, prepares catch and weir reports, and assists with inseason management decisions for commercial salmon fisheries to ensure escapement goals are achieved across the North Alaska Peninsula.

We are seeking an energetic, committed, and well-rounded fishery biologist with:

  • Demonstrated supervisory, leadership, and project management experience, with the ability to make independent, time-sensitive decisions.
  • Experience with salmon enumeration weirs and aerial surveys.
  • A strong background in developing, maintaining, and operating remote field camps, structures, and equipment.
  • Working knowledge of commercial salmon fisheries.
  • The ability to communicate effectively and establish and maintain productive working relationships with department staff, stakeholder organizations, and the public in both remote and non-remote settings.

Note:

A valid driver's license is required. This position may be in possession of, or have access to, firearms/ammunition. First Aid/CPR. For those not already certified, training will be provided by the department at no cost to the employee.

Minimum Qualifications:

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, fisheries science, or natural resource management;

AND

One year of professional experience as a biologist or fish culturist. The required professional biologist experience is met by service as a Fishery Biologist 1, Fish Culturist 1, Wildlife Biologist 1, or Habitat Biologist 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.

Substitutions:

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:

  • at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, aquaculture, aquatic ecology, fisheries resources, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and
