Youth Activities Coordinator

Responsibilities
  • Assist the Youth Activities Coordinator (YAC) with implementing after school and summer youth programs at the Family Investment Center (FIC) of the Kodiak Island Housing Authority (KIHA).
  • Plan activities, oversee activities, set up equipment and supplies, and supervise youth participating in onsite and offsite activities.
  • Prepare daily snacks and meals, assist in cleaning up activity areas and organizing equipment after activities have ended.
  • Fill in for the YAC in their absence.
  • Work a schedule dictated by the needs of the youth program; varies between the school year and summer break, with some scheduled evening work.
  • Be trained by KIHA, at cost to KIHA, to drive the KIHA bus.
Illustrative Tasks
  • Supervise youth during activities; explain required tasks or rules; provide guidance and direction; apply fair, consistent, and age-appropriate consequences; assist in identifying behavioral needs and documenting behavioral issues.
  • Set up necessary equipment and supplies; store and stow when not in use; inspect for safe use.
  • Demonstrate leadership to ensure proper conduct, safety, and development of housing participants.
  • Assist with implementing a literacy development program.
  • Prepare and serve meals for the KIHA youth food assistance program; adhere to applicable health and safety guidelines; follow proper food storage and preparation procedures; help develop healthy menus and meal plans that meet nutritional guidelines.
  • Daily cleanup of kitchen and activity areas of the Family Investment Center.
  • Promote and market activities to youth and families via announcements, calendars, and schedules; use accessible communication routes.
  • Ensure youth housing participants have access to self-sufficiency development resources (e.g., scholarship search, work search, application assistance).
  • Encourage participation in activities that promote healthy life skills and social interactions; work in partnership with other community resources.
  • Assist with social engagement and community relationship-building events such as Christmas parties and picnics.
  • Problem-solve common tasks using policy, procedure, and supervisor guidance.
  • Take attendance and record information required by the YAC; assist with obtaining written consent of parents/guardians for field trips prior to transporting youth.
  • Maintain appropriate levels of confidentiality as defined by regulation, policy, and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the YAC or Service Coordinator.
  • Maintain professional and respectful interactions with internal and external partners, applicants, tenants, and participants; provide timely customer service.
  • Promote a safe and drug-free work environment.
Key Relationships
  • Work closely with participant children and parents to understand family and child needs.
  • Work closely and professionally with other FIC staff.
Skills And Competencies
  • Previous experience working with youth required.
  • Experience with trauma-informed care or understanding of challenges and compassion necessary for working with youth facing barriers or disabilities.
  • Required to receive Food Handler’s Certificate (KIHA will assist).
  • Must have a valid State of Alaska Driver’s License with a good driving record and be able to obtain immediately a School Bus Passenger Endorsement for the State of Alaska.
Abilities
  • Must be 21 years of age.
  • Ability to handle loud, chaotic environments; communicate effectively with youth and adults.
  • Interact with youth from a position of authority; follow directions and accept constructive criticism and feedback.
  • Pass necessary background checks and drug tests; participate in activities with youth.
  • Lift 50 lbs. (required to move gear and equipment for activities).
  • Work some evening hours.

Salary Range: $27,443 - $55,808 DOE
