We can’t do it without YOU!

Overview

At Tennessee Cancer Specialists, our employees walk with patients and families throughout the cancer journey. Whether you work directly with patients in one of our clinics or in a support role, you are essential to delivering the highest quality, compassionate care. Our 300+ employees span 17 East Tennessee locations.

As a Pre‑Certification Specialist, you assist providers with obtaining prior authorization from various insurance carriers for ordered medications and treatments.

Responsibilities

In this Monday‑Friday role, you obtain authorization for patient treatments and remove barriers that might delay care. Your customer service skills allow you to respectfully communicate with payors, ensuring no delay in the patient’s treatment plan. You work with a dedicated team to troubleshoot issues and serve as a point of contact for clinic teams, fielding questions or assisting with additional needs.

  • Knowledge of chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or other infusion treatment authorization requirements for all payors helps you stay ahead of the pre‑certification process.
  • Exceptional customer service through respectful communication, thorough listening, and appropriate questioning in conversations with patients, coworkers, and providers.
  • Prompt feedback to physicians, management, and clinical staff regarding restrictions, special requirements, and payor issues related to specific insurance plans.
  • Patient‑focused mindset to research alternative solutions for authorizations and recognize trends with treatments and payors.
  • Go‑getter work ethic ready to help with any additional duties.
Qualifications
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required; an associate’s degree in a business‑related field is even better.
  • Prior experience as a medical assistant or LPN gives you an edge.
  • Proficiency with electronic health records, payor portals, and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel) is a must.
  • You live in the Knoxville area or are relocating; the role is fully onsite.
  • At least one year of direct experience in a similar position (pre‑certification, benefit financial counseling, benefits verification, referral specialist, medical assistant, LPN) is required.
Physical Demands

Must sit for long periods, occasionally stoop, bend, or stretch for supplies. Lifting limited to 10 lbs or less. Manual dexterity required for office equipment. Vision and hearing adequate for prolonged screen view and conversations. Reasonable accommodations may be made.

Work Environment

Office environment involving frequent interaction with patients, clinical and business office staff, and payors. Reasonable accommodations may be made.

EOE/M/F/D/V/SO. We are a Drug‑free Workplace.
