Reporting To

Senior Director of Engineering

Your Role in the Mission

The Mechanical Engineering Manager will oversee, coordinate, and optimize the deployment of engineering resources across multiple technically complex programs. The role combines people leadership, resource and capacity planning, and hands‑on technical oversight. It also includes senior design duties such as design reviews, and ensuring the quality and integrity of engineering models, analyses, and drawings.

Engineering Resource Planning & Allocation
  • Assign engineers to projects based on skill set, experience, and project priorities.
  • Balance workloads across teams to avoid burnout or skill misalignment.
  • Continuously monitor resource capacity across ongoing and planned projects.
  • Forecast future engineering resource requirements based on pipeline, schedules, and objectives.
  • Resolve resource conflicts and competing priorities with the Senior Director of Engineering.
People Leadership & Performance Management
  • Lead assigned engineers, scientists, and technical staff.
  • Serve as a point of escalation for employee needs and concerns to HR and leadership.
  • Facilitate performance management processes, including goal setting, feedback, reviews, and development planning.
  • Ensure effective task delivery and address performance or engagement issues proactively.
Capability Development & Workforce Growth
  • Maintain deep understanding of team technical skills, strengths, and development areas.
  • Identify missing or critical skill sets for current and future program needs.
  • Partner with HR to support recruiting and onboarding of new engineers.
  • Support individual engineers in training and professional development.
  • Establish and maintain core engineering capability teams (e.g., simulation, CAD, drawing, analysis).
Engineering Quality & Technical Oversight
  • Mentor junior and mid‑career engineers to grow technical depth.
  • Enforce sound engineering practices, standards, and documentation requirements.
  • Participate in technical and design reviews for quality and integration.
  • Review and provide oversight on engineering models, analyses, and drawings.
  • Promote continuous improvement in engineering processes, tools, and workflows.
What You’ll Need
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Physics, or related discipline.
  • 10+ years of experience in engineering design within complex technical environments.
  • 5+ years of experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Experience developing and deploying new or first‑of‑a‑kind technologies.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Analytical mindset with ability to forecast resource needs, manage capacity, and balance competing priorities.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience as a resource manager in a matrixed engineering organization.
  • Familiarity with Jira, Microsoft Teams, or similar work‑management tools.
  • Experience in fusion energy, advanced energy, nuclear, or high‑reliability sectors.
  • Proficiency with Siemens NX.
  • Experience with PLM systems.
  • Ability to operate in fast‑paced environments with aggressive schedules.
