Position: Dept of Acct & Info Mgmt (Fall 2026) 2 Non-Tenure Track Accounting Faculty

Description

The Department of Accounting and Information Management (AIM) in Haslam College of Business at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK) is accepting applications for two full-time, non-tenure track positions in Accounting to begin August 1, 2026. These positions will be classified under the Lecturer or Teaching Professor tracks, with the specific title and rank dependent on qualifications.

Position Details

The AIM Department anticipates hiring two non‑tenure‑track faculty members to support teaching needs across the accounting curriculum, which includes courses in audit, financial accounting, managerial accounting, and tax. While candidates will not be expected to teach in all areas of the curriculum, the department has a particular interest in hiring individuals who can contribute to course offerings in audit or tax.

Applicants should have a strong commitment to teaching and service in an intellectually stimulating environment. The workload description for this position does not include a research requirement. The specific course assignments, as well as the separate determinations of track (Lecturer or Teaching Professor) and rank of all hires, will be based on departmental needs and candidate strengths.

Department Overview

Our accounting program has seen substantial growth in student enrollments over the past four years, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Our accounting program is AACSB‑accredited, and our Master of Accountancy (MAcc) program has received STEM designation from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Our undergraduate and graduate accounting programs were ranked 15th and 13th, respectively, among public institutions by U.S. World and News Report in 2025.

A key strength of our department is the collaboration between accounting and information management faculty, allowing us to offer our accounting students industry‑demanded skills in AI, analytics, cybersecurity, and information systems.

Location

The University of Tennessee is located in Knoxville, nestled in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, has a metropolitan statistical area population of approximately 900,000 people. This moderate‑sized city has a vibrant nightlife that includes numerous theaters and museums, traditional bluegrass music, world‑class restaurants, many cultural festivals, and a downtown Market Square to name a few examples. Surrounded by lakes and the Tennessee River, the Knoxville area boasts wonderful year‑round water activities, including boating, fishing, and swimming that make for scenic and breathtaking views of the area.

Consistent with the University of Tennessee, Knoxville Faculty Handbook and college/department bylaws, non‑tenure‑track titles and ranks are determined based on credentials and a documented record of effectiveness in assigned responsibilities (primarily teaching). Standards and procedures related to appointment and promotion standards are additionally governed by department and college bylaws.

Lecturer Series (Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Distinguished Lecturer)
  • Lecturer:
    Holds (or will hold at the time of appointment) a Master’s degree or higher in Accounting or a related field and shows promise for excellence in assigned responsibilities.
  • Senior Lecturer:
    As above, with a demonstrated record of excellence in assigned responsibilities.
  • Distinguished Lecturer:
    As above, with a sustained, consistent record of excellence in assigned responsibilities.
Teaching Professor Series (Assistant, Associate, Teaching Professor)
  • Teaching Assistant Professor:
    Holds a Ph.D. (or will hold at the time of appointment) in Accounting or a related field with promise for excellence in teaching and related responsibilities, evidenced by early effectiveness and contributions.
  • Teaching Associate Professor:
    Terminal degree with a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching and related responsibilities.
