The Town of Knightdale is seeking a detail-oriented student to serve as a Stormwater Intern within the Public Works Department. This position assists with stormwater inspections, compliance documentation, GIS mapping, and data entry in support of the Town's NPDES MS4 permit and Stormwater Management Plan. The Stormwater Intern will gain hands-on experience working both in the field and in an office setting, supporting inspections of stormwater infrastructure, development sites, and privately owned stormwater control measures.
The role also includes interacting with staff and the public while assisting with regulatory reporting and educational outreach. This internship provides practical experience in municipal stormwater management and environmental compliance. Students currently enrolled in engineering, environmental science, construction management, or a related program are encouraged to apply. Under general supervision, performs a variety of skilled and limited skill manual labor work assisting the Stormwater Program Manager with tasks associated with the Town's NPDES MS4 permit in accordance with the Town's Stormwater Management Plan. This position is classified as non-exempt and is subject to the Fair Labor Standards Act overtime regulations.
PRIMARY TASKS:
- Assists with GIS mapping of the Town's Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System.
- Assists with data entry associated with stormwater compliance.
- Generates correspondence to regulatory agencies.
- Documents and reports compliance with activities and results.
- Assists with inspections, both independently and collaboratively, including but not limited to:
- Inspections of existing stormwater conveyances such as piping, inlets, and out-falls.
- Inspections of privately owned SCM facilities.
- Inspections of active development projects.
- Investigates complaints, requests, and suggestions from citizens, businesses, contractors, government agencies, and internal staff regarding stormwater and erosion control.
- Distributes educational material at Town-hosted events.
- Performs other duties as required.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: This position reports to the Public Works Director and Stormwater Manager.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Employees are subjected to hazards present in construction sites and stormwater facilities including both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as rough and uneven terrain, steep inclines, hazardous materials, equipment, loud noises, traffic, vibrations, chemicals, fumes, and confined quarters both above and below ground.
- Must be able to physically perform all basic life operational functions.
- Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally; up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly.
- Must possess the visual acuity to prepare and analyze data, perform visual inspections, read blueprints, operate and read measuring devices, and perform extensive reading.
QUALIFICATIONS OF CLASS:
Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or GED program required. Currently enrolled in an engineering, environmental science, construction management, or other related program with an accredited college or university.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- General knowledge of environmental principles associated with stormwater.
- General knowledge and experience using Arc Map or similar GIS software preferred.
- General knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in area of assigned responsibility.
- Good working knowledge of hazards involved and safety precautions necessary in the performance of duties.
- Ability to prepare written reports and records.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to deal courteously and tactfully with the public.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
