Recreation Leader I

Under regular supervision, performs responsible work by assisting in the supervision and planning of recreation classes and activities. Work is performed under the supervision of the Recreation & Leisure Services Supervisor and/or Recreation Specialist.

• Assists in the supervision and planning of general recreation classes and activities.
• Implements activities according to schedule as well as prepares and implements lesson planning for each day of the program.
• Conducts programs in an orderly fashion maintaining discipline and good conduct from the participants.
• Greets participants and visitors and distributes accurate information regarding classes and activities.
• Assists in the organization of administrative records including but not limited to daily attendance, participant emergency information, accident reports and medication logs.
• Distributes accurate information regarding classes and activities. Maintains open and positive communication with staff.
• Assists in set-up and preparation of needed materials/supplies/ equipment. Enforces rules and regulations to ensure safety of participants.
• Maintains neatness and cleanliness of activity areas. Administer basic first aid as needed.
• May perform facility maintenance, i.e. garbage disposal or custodial work. May be required to work events and rentals as needed.
• Performs related duties as required.

Must be at least fifteen (15) years of age. Requires a middle school diploma supplemented by a combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. High School graduate preferred. Must possess or have the ability to obtain within three (3) months of hire CPR/AED/First Aid certifications. Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Driver's License or Florida .

Hours and schedule varies depending on the time of the year, not to exceed on average of 28 hours per week. Nights, weekends and early mornings may be required.

Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines and equipment including a computer, basic office equipment, telephone, hand and power tools, etc. Tasks involve the ability to exert moderate, though not constant, physical effort, typically involving some combination of remaining on feet for extended periods of time, climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20) pounds to moderately heavy weight (up to 50 pounds).

Has thorough knowledge of the methods, procedures, and policies of the Parks & Recreation Department as they pertain to the performance of duties of the Recreation Leader. Is knowledgeable in the laws, ordinances, standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. Has knowledge in the areas of recreation, program organization and implementation, etc. Is able to make sound, educated decisions.

Has the ability to plan, organize, and prioritize daily assignments and work activities. Has the ability to offer assistance to co-workers and employees of other departments as required. Is able to take the initiative to complete the duties of the position. Has the ability to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency. Is able to prepare simple reports and records.

Has knowledge of the terminology used within the department. Knows how to maintain effective relationships with personnel of other departments, professionals and members of the public through contact and cooperation. Has the ability to communicate professionally in confrontational situations. Has thorough knowledge of proper English usage. Has knowledge of the standard equipment, tools, materials and practices of the industry. Has skill in the care and use of required tools and equipment.
