ThePosition
An exciting opportunity has arisen within the mainland community nursing teams for two full‑time District Nurse Specialist Practitioner/Senior Community Nurses. Applications are invited from experienced, enthusiastic, and motivated individuals who are able to demonstrate a breadth of knowledge and experience in the areas of practice detailed within The Scottish Government Transforming Roles paper.
The post holders will have accountability for the caseload management and care coordination of highly complex patients in a remote and rural area. You should have leadership experience and demonstrate highly developed team working and interpersonal qualities. This role will comprise of 0830‑1700 working with weekend and out‑of‑hours cover.
Candidate RequirementsApplicants should possess a range of clinical assessment skills including history taking and physical examination and should be a Community Practitioner and Non‑Medical Prescriber. Applicants should demonstrate an ability to contribute to a positive learning environment, ensuring learning opportunities for staff and students.
Location, Working Pattern and Contract DurationThis post will be based at The Balfour.
Successful candidate will work:
Full Time 37 hours per week. NHS Scotland is reducing their full time working week from 37 to 36 hours per week from 1 April 2026 but with no change in pay. This reduction will also be applied pro rata for part time staff.
This post is Fixed Term until 31/12/2026 to cover for substantive postholders secondment leave.
It is a condition of this employment that you must live and remain a resident within the UK for the post in which you will be employed with NHS Orkney.

Benefits and SalaryThe salary for this post is Band 6 and if residing on Orkney, you’ll also receive a Distant Islands Allowance of £1,657 pro rata per annum.
