Google’s software engineers develop the next-generation technologies that change how billions of users connect, explore, and interact with information and one another. Our products need to manage information at a massive scale, and extend well beyond web search. As a software engineer, you will work on a specific project critical to Google’s needs with opportunities to switch teams and projects as you and our fast‑paced business grow and evolve. We need our engineers to be versatile, display leadership qualities and be enthusiastic to take on new problems across the full‑stack as we continue to push technology forward.

Big Query is one of the leaders in the data warehousing space. As we learned in recent years, most of the queries users run are working on small datasets. Our team’s mission is to make Big Query the best data warehouse for low latency, high throughput use‑cases. Over the last few years, we built optimizations to solve parts of this problem.

We recently proved that small queries on industry benchmarks can execute an order of magnitude faster if we cut overhead and optimize execution. As a result, half of Big Query queries could run over 50% faster, closing a major participant gap.

• Improve Big Query engine to remove bottlenecks for low latency queries, design solutions that are easy to maintain and extend.
• Conduct tests and monitoring systems to ensure quality.
• Work with other Big Query teams to reduce overhead and remove bottlenecks.
• Work with Big Query and Dremel codebase, which is primarily C++ with some Java in data planes and Python for tests.
• Improve engineering excellence across the stack.

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
• 5 years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages.
• 3 years of experience testing, maintaining, or launching software products, and 1 year of experience with software design and architecture.
• 3 years of experience with developing large‑scale infrastructure, distributed systems or networks, or experience with compute technologies, storage or hardware architecture.
• Experience in the following: database internals, query processing, performance analysis, SQL.
• Experience programming in C++.

• Master’s degree or PhD in Computer Science or a related technical field.
• Experience with vectorized query runtimes, low‑level systems implementation, performance analysis and optimization, and engineering for scalability, high performance, large‑scale distributed systems.
• Experience in the following: influencing, collaboration, concurrency, multithreading, synchronization, distributed computing, distributed databases.
• Experience with database query runtimes.
• Experience working on performance improvement projects spanning multiple functional areas.
• Experience building infrastructure in Google Cloud or other cloud providers.
