Job SummaryThe City of Kirkland's Public Works Department is seeking to hire a Senior Maintenance Person for the Public Works - Maint. Center Street Crew. This position is responsible for performing water, sewer, street, and drainage systems maintenance and operation and related work.
Principal Accountabilities- Responsible for a variety of skilled and semi-skilled services involving the City's water, sewer, street, and drainage systems.
- Coordinate field activities at a crew level.
- Respond to off‑hour emergency situations affecting public health and safety.
The Senior Maintenance Person may be assigned responsibilities in one or more of the following areas: water, sewer, street, or drainage operations, maintenance, or construction. Representative duties include:
- Performs street maintenance, traffic control (signs and signals), and vegetation control on site.
- Performs sewer maintenance including mains, pumping stations, and appurtenances.
- Performs water system maintenance of mains, valves, hydrants, meters, PRVs, and appurtenances.
- Performs storm drain maintenance including mains, catch basins, detention/retention facilities, and channelization.
- Operates all public work equipment including backhoe loader, street sweeper, vactor, sewer jet, motor grader, dozer, and dump trucks.
- Coordinates field activities at a crew level in the absence of a Lead or Supervisor.
- May be required to perform standby duty if volunteers are insufficient.
- Help monitor and maintain inventory of parts and tools; record materials, hours, and equipment used.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to operate heavy equipment listed above.
- Excellent knowledge of common hand and power tools.
- Ability to organize and layout work at the job site.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and maps.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid Washington State Driver's License, Class A combination with air and tanker endorsement.
- Minimum four years of utility and street construction and maintenance experience (equivalent experience considered).
- Ability to lift and move heavy (up to 50 lbs.) and bulky objects.
- Certified flagger in the State of Washington.
- Knowledge of safety regulations and rules for work area safety and confined space entry.
- Willing to work outdoors in inclement weather.
- Willing and able to climb in and out of trenches, excavation and construction equipment; also work at heights and on ladders.
