Job Summary

Get outdoors, Be a mentor, Get paid and make a difference! Teen Day Camp Leader’s play a vital role in assisting with physical activity, social interaction, and overall well-being within their community. You will assist the Teen Day Camp Director, and other leaders, in guiding teens throughout several outdoor recreation adventures in and around the local region. The experiences you will be able to add to your resume, after one summer, are below, but not limited to:

Primary Responsibilities
  • Cultural

    Competency:

    Understand of the experiences and community issues affecting those marginalized in mainstream outdoor opportunities, such as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color), and/or LGBTQIA+ communities and demonstrate the ability to work with people of diverse races, ages, genders, abilities, and economic backgrounds.
  • Youth Engagement:
    Assist with providing recreational programs and activities that align with the interests and preferences of teenagers to keep them engaged.
  • DEIB focused:
    Support the DEIB values (diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging) in all aspects of Teen Programs
  • Mentorship:
    Serve as a positive role model and mentor, providing guidance and support for teenagers as they develop life skills and social abilities.
  • Youth Development:
    Help with activities that foster personal growth, leadership skills, and self-esteem among teenagers. Maintain a balance between providing autonomy and ensuring the safety and well-being of youth.
  • Safety

    Education:

    Educate teenagers about the importance of safety in recreational activities, including the use of protective gear and adherence to rules.
  • Open Communication:
    Encourage and model open and honest communication to build trust and rapport with teenagers, allowing them to express their thoughts and concerns.
  • Collaboration:

    Collaborate with teammates, to enhance teenagers' recreational experiences and expand opportunities.
  • Evaluation and Feedback:
    Regularly gather feedback from teenagers and share with your team.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Good verbal, written, and telephone communication skills are required.
  • Ability to interact courteously with the public to acknowledge both compliments and complaints.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrate good judgement in problem solving and responding to customer needs.
  • Knowledge of general hiking etiquette, Leave No Trace, and traversing the outdoors safely
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be 18 years of age, or older
  • At least one year of experience working with youth
  • Must successfully complete a thorough background check as required by the Child/Adult Abuse Information Act

In place of the above requirements, the incumbent may possess any combination of relevant education and experience which would demonstrate the individual’s knowledge, skill, and ability to proficiently perform the essential duties and responsibilities listed above.

Hours of Work

During the 9 weeks of summer adventures, attendance is extremely necessary for all staff positions. Staff are seasonal positions that support a mandatory staff to camper ratio. Please give us at least a month notice for any requested days off throughout the summer.

Typical day is 7-8 hours per day between 9am – 5pm. Monday – Friday’s between, June 29th - August 28th. Work schedule may fluctuate during periods of low attendance and poor weather/air quality days. Training Days and times will be scheduled in the middle of June.

Working Conditions & Physical Activities
  • Performs work in settings indoor and outdoor, including multipurpose rooms, parks, playgrounds, beaches, trails, and recreation sites.
  • Exposure to extended periods of direct sunlight and/or cool and damp weather is possible. Exposure to insects and wildlife is possible when out on a trail in our region. Staff will receive training and other preventative measures upon hire.
  • Walk/Hike 3-5 miles for four days consecutively.
  • The job requires frequent light lifting and carrying (15-20 lbs.) up to five miles, and infrequent heavy lifting of up to 50lbs.
