Systems Engineer, Data Engineer
Job Summary
5‑Month project with the possibility of extension, but the duration will not exceed 8 months. Remote candidates will be accepted; onsite availability 3 days per week is preferred. The program consists of two projects with two parallel teams: retrofit (HRU) and new‑build (CDU), each led by a project manager, a data scientist, two developers and, if needed, an SME.
Team OverviewThe Signals Quality team, part of Microsoft’s CO+I IDEA group, deploys high‑reliability detections across data‑center telemetry. The team blends analytics (Python/KQL), cloud‑native engineering (Azure Functions/Logic Apps), and CI/CD hardening via Azure Dev Ops, collaborating closely with Solutions Engineering to deliver rapid low/no‑code deployments that graduate into production‑grade components.
Project OverviewThis role focuses on translating validated detection logic into deployable analytics for two site environments:
- Retrofit sites using HRU (Heat Rejection Units)
- New‑build sites using CDU (Cooling Distribution Units)
Key Responsibilities
- Analyze large telemetry sets; shape and replay datasets; validate detection effectiveness and tune severity to reduce alert fatigue.
- Translate prototype logic into production‑ready analytics (Python/KQL); package into Azure Functions/Logic Apps and set up CI/CD pipelines.
- Work with Solutions Engineering on low/no‑code accelerators; coordinate with engineering to harden and scale solutions.
- Validate data paths and telemetry onboarding; triage signal gaps with domain SMEs (CDU/HRU).
- Track work in Azure Dev Ops boards; contribute to design notes, detection descriptions, validation plans, and weekly status updates for the PM.
- Advanced KQL / Azure Data Explorer (ADX)
- Time‑series queries (make‑series, makes‑list, joins, windows) for telemetry analysis at scale
- Build replay datasets and run historical backtests to validate thresholds and anomaly logic
- Identify data gaps and propose telemetry enhancements; map operational scenarios to available signals
- Python for analytics (incl. notebooks) – 7+ years of experience
- Wrangle/transpose large datasets; implement feature engineering for detection logic
- Prototype and harden anomaly/threshold detection logic; collaborate with DS to quantify precision/recall and reduce alert fatigue
- Package analytics into Azure Functions or glue code around Logic Apps when appropriate
- Azure Functions / Logic Apps + Azure Dev Ops CI/CD – 3+ years of experience
- Manage pipelines, artifacts, secrets, and approvals in ADO
- Integrate detection outputs into downstream systems and operator‑facing surfaces; contribute to runbooks and validation plans
- Partner with Solutions Engineering to deliver rapid low/no‑code wins that graduate into hardened CI/CD‑backed services
- Experience with c# and Power Shell
- Git Hub and Dev Ops workflow expertise
- Machine learning or AI exposure is a plus
