Founded in 2002, Eastside Prep was re-accredited by the Northwest Association of Independent Schools (NWAIS) in January 2019. Eastside Prep has grown from 17 students in  to a projected total of 540 students for  academic year.

Position Summary:

This position leads the Upper School makerspace and engineering lab, supports the broader technology program, and serves as a coach for the school’s FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) robotics team. The role combines hands‑on technical expertise, safety leadership, student mentorship, and classroom technology support. Reports to the Director of IT Operations.

Hours:

Monday to Friday, 9:45 AM to 5:45 PM, with 3 to 4 weekends per year for Robotics tournaments.

Duties and Responsibilities

The responsibilities below outline the core functions of the role, which require strong technical expertise, a commitment to student‑centered learning, and the ability to support hands‑on, project‑based innovation across programs.

Makerspace & Engineering Lab Leadership
  • Staff and supervise the Upper School makerspace/engineering lab
  • Train and certify students on equipment and safety procedures
  • Develop structured certification pathways and project‑based learning opportunities
  • Oversee general lab safety and maintain safety documentation
  • Obtain and maintain laser safety certification for CNC laser equipment
  • Maintain and troubleshoot equipment, including Tormach 1100M CNC mill, laser cutters, FDM and resin 3D printers, and electronics/soldering stations
  • Manage consumables, supplies, and maintenance schedules
Robotics Coaching
  • Serve as coach for the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) robotics team
  • Guide students in FTC‑specific mechanical design, control systems, programming (Java‑based FTC SDK), and competition preparation
  • Support students in project management, teamwork, engineering notebooks, and tournament readiness
Student Engagement & Program Development
  • Create opportunities for students (primarily grades 9–12) to engage in hands‑on making
  • Support interdisciplinary projects across science, engineering, art, and computer science
  • Foster a culture of responsible tool use and iterative design
Technology Support
  • Provide classroom technology troubleshooting and support
  • Assist the technology department, including after‑school coverage as needed
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Candidate should have demonstrated skills in the following areas:

  • Experience working with middle and/or high school students
  • CNC machining (ideally with a Tormach 1100M or similar mill)
  • Laser cutting and digital fabrication workflows
  • 3D printing (including resin systems)
  • Basic electronics, wiring, and soldering
  • Familiar with CAD and CAM software
  • Strong safety mindset and procedural discipline
  • Ability to troubleshoot mechanical and technical systems
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Calm, solutions‑oriented approach in a fast‑paced environment

Candidate should have some experience or be excited to learn the following:

  • Laser safety certification requirements and compliance
  • FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) rules, scoring structure, and seasonal game requirements
  • Emerging fabrication tools and technologies
  • Classroom technology systems and AV troubleshooting

  • Strong interpersonal skills with both colleagues and students
  • Demonstrated ability to manage tools, equipment, and physical work spaces
  • Bachelor’s degree and two years of related experience preferred
