Collects, describes, and organizes archival materials. Oversees the purchasing, receiving, and processing of books. Supervises up to ten student assistants with the Library Director. Provide customer service and reference assistance as needed. Occasional weekend and evening hours may be required. Full-time position, 1 FTE.

Essential Functions
  • Manages the harvesting and processing of archival materials in print and digital formats. Collects NU publications such as magazines, course syllabi, email newsletters, theses and dissertations in both digital and print formats. Supervises the creation of metadata and the digitization of print materials. Files physical materials in the archive according to accepted practices. Learns new archival standards and supervises students on archival processes.
  • Manages the acquisition and cataloging of print books for the library. Acquires books and textbooks from vendors, donations and other sources; selects appropriate catalog records and updates library holdings, oversees physical processing of the materials; and tracks library book budget. Tracks and replaces lost and missing books.
  • Supervises up to ten student assistants, including hiring, directing their work, and conducting performance reviews with the Library Director. Plan and assign tasks. Train students on circulation and maintain oversight on all student assistants’ archival tasks.
  • Assists patrons with locating, retrieving, and checking out materials. Answers basic library informational and directional questions and refers library users to appropriate library staff for other services. Assists with reference support as needed. Respond to phone, email, chat, and video reference sessions in a timely manner.
  • Process interlibrary loan borrowing and lending
  • Performs collection management in assigned areas and works with librarians to formulate collection policy.
  • Supports greater library initiatives and performs other duties as assigned.
Education/Experience/Skills
  • One year of applicable library experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform very detailed work with accuracy and efficiency.
  • Demonstrated organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Good communication skills: able to communicate verbally and in writing with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Computer literate with the ability to use Microsoft Office Suite and to assist students on various devices.
  • Able to lift, move, carry, and shelve library materials with the assistance of a book cart.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Ability to communicate well with faculty, students, and staff and to work collaboratively with colleagues in a team environment.
  • Work is generally performed indoors in a typical office setting.
  • Frequently required to be in front of a computer screen for long periods of time.
Physical Demands

The functions are usually performed while sitting, but may involve some amount of time standing, stooping, kneeling, bending, crouching, lifting (max. of 40 lbs.), walking, reaching, and performing repetitive motions of the hands or wrists and other movements. The abilities of seeing, hearing and speaking are also required.

Compensation

Based on education and experience, the position has a hiring range of $20.00/hour to $21.30/hour plus excellent benefits.
