Being an on-call employee means that your work schedule is not guaranteed, hours worked could range from 0 - 40 hours a week, depending on office needs. All hours worked are subject to Department of Retirement Services and Affordable Care Act reporting requirements. More information will be shared during the interview, and we encourage questions about the program.
The On-Call Building Inspector I position is responsible for inspecting construction of new industrial, commercial, multifamily, and single-family buildings, and remodel work to existing structures, to ensure compliance with approved plans, laws, codes, and regulations, thereby ensuring minimum standards for fire and life/safety codes, structural integrity, and public welfare.
Key Responsibilities- Inspect buildings and structures to ensure compliance with laws, codes, and regulations relating to building construction, mechanical systems, plumbing systems, state energy code requirements, local zoning requirements, and job site erosion control.
- Investigate compliance complaints and, if necessary, mediate a resolution.
- Conducts site inspections of new and old commercial and residential buildings and structures to ensure compliance with approved plans and codes, notes violations, reinspects to ensure all noted violations have been corrected, and can stop work on a construction site if code violations are not corrected and make final approval of a structure prior to occupancy.
- Plan and schedule routes to ensure the most efficient use of time.
- Answer questions and provide technical advice related to building and structure code compliance.
- Investigate and respond to complaints regarding code compliance and inform the complainant of violations and corrective actions.
- Log daily inspections and prepare inspection reports; read special inspection reports for compliance and file reports.
- Inspect sites for grading and soil excavation or other land modifications; determine if a licensed survey is required for setback verification.
- Respond to public and contractor inquiries concerning interpretation of building and related codes, construction problems, and City procedures; communicate clearly in oral and written form.
- Monitor construction to ensure completion before occupancy or permit expiration or timely renewal.
- Maintain adequate records to ensure proper documentation of inspections.
- Inspect nonstructural problems with building sites, such as surface water problems and inadequate access, and refer to the appropriate City department as needed.
- Use computer daily; demonstrate basic keyboard and computer skills.
- Perform daily inspections of vehicles, including checking tires and lights and determining if service is necessary.

- Ensure construction progress aligns with permit status and renewal timelines.
- Operate in accordance with safety and environmental guidelines.
- Position requires daily computer use and ability to learn basic computer skills.
- Daily vehicle inspections and upkeep as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Education:
High school diploma or GED. - Experience:
3 years of construction or inspection experience. - Or:
Any combination of relevant education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the essential duties.
Licenses and Other Requirements:
- Must have a valid Washington State Driver's license and be insurable to operate City vehicles.
- Must possess and maintain ICC Residential Building Inspector (B1) certification within 1 year.
- Must have good oral and written communication skills.
