Position: Consultant in Microbiology and Infectious Disease (LW)

Applications are invited from GMC‑registered medical practitioners for a full‑time Consultant post in Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. This new position forms part of our strategy to create a fully integrated Microbiology and Infectious Diseases department.

Successful candidates will play a key role in:

  • Managing patients with complex infections in the acute hospital setting
  • Expanding the Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy (OPAT) service
  • Overseeing care for patients admitted with suspected high‑consequence infectious diseases

We welcome applications from individuals interested in pursuing a joint clinical and academic career in collaboration with the University of St Andrews. Dedicated academic time may be available for this purpose.

On-Call and Weekend Commitments

Out‑of‑hours responsibilities include emergency cover for Medical Microbiology and Infection Control on a 1-in‑5 on‑call rota. Weekend duties involve laboratory attendance on Saturdays and on‑call from home (or in‑person attendance, based on preference) on Sundays. This typically equates to approximately 1 PA across both days and is compensated by time off in lieu‑usually a Friday following an on‑call weekend.

About the Department

The Microbiology service is based in the North Laboratory at the Victoria Hospital campus in Kirkcaldy, Fife and holds UKAS accreditation (ISO 15189:2022) for all services except environmental and andrology testing. The department processes approximately 300,000 specimens annually and offers a comprehensive range of services, including:

  • Clinical and environmental bacteriology
  • Parasitology, mycology, viral serology
  • Andrology and limited entomology
  • Expanded molecular testing, including Enteric PCR introduced in 2024
  • Point‑of‑care testing for respiratory viruses (including SARS‑CoV‑2) in key clinical areas during winter months

The department is recognised for rotational South East Scotland training for the FRCPath examination in Microbiology.

Applicants must have full GMC Registration, a license to practise and eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from the date of interview. Portfolio Pathway (formerly known as CESR – Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration) route doctors are only eligible to apply for a substantive consultant post once it has been awarded.

Non-UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training to Non-UK Applicants must demonstrate that they have the knowledge, skills and experience required for practising as an eligible specialist in the UK.
