Our Hyperacute Stroke Unit (HASU) provides fast-paced, specialist care to patients in the crucial first 72 hours following stroke. We are a dynamic, multidisciplinary service delivering thrombolysis, thrombectomy pathways, advanced monitoring and high-intensity nursing care.
We are looking for a highly motivated and clinically confident nurse to join our leadership team as a Band 6 Charge Nurse.
Main duties of the jobAs a Band 6 Charge Nurse, you will play a key role in maintaining high standards of acute stroke care, supporting junior staff and ensuring safe and effective patient flow within the unit. This is an excellent opportunity for nurses with stroke, acute medical, neurology, or critical care experience looking to develop advanced leadership and clinical skills.

A registered nurse with post-registration experience in acute or stroke care.

Our services:
Acute Care
Providing emergency and maternity services at Whiston, Southport and Ormskirk hospitals, and medical and surgical specialties across all our sites.

Providing primary care services at Marshalls Cross Medical Centre situated in St Helens Hospital.
Community Services
Providing adult community services for St Helens and a wheelchair service in Chorley, South Ribble, and West Lancashire. Our inpatient unit at Newton Community Hospital is where patients needing acute hospital beds can continue rehabilitation. We also provide urgent care at our Urgent Treatment Centre located in St Helens town centre.
Specialist Regional Services
We provide the Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston Hospital and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital to more than 4 million people across the whole of Merseyside, West Lancashire, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.

Job responsibilitiesKey Responsibilities
- Provide clinical leadership and act as the nurse in charge of the unit as required.
- Deliver high quality, evidence based care to hyperacute stroke patients.
- Support rapid assessment and emergency interventions including thrombolysis pathway coordination.
- Mentor, supervise and assess junior nurses, students and support staff.
- Ensure safe staffing, patient flow and effective communication with the wider MDT.
- Contribute to quality improvement, stroke pathway development and audit activity.
- Coordinate escalation, safeguarding and patient safety processes.
- 1st Level Registered Nurse (degree/diploma)
- Current NMC Registration
- Evidence of continuing professional development
- Able to demonstrate knowledge of NMC professional standards for practice contained within the code
- Experience of working in a clinical environment
- Understand requirements for NMC professional Revalidation
- Experience of working within a multi-disciplinary team
- An understanding of national, regional and local NHS issues
- Experience of providing and receiving complex, sensitive information
