Overview
Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is inviting applications for a Band 6 Clinical Pharmacist. The closing date is 25 January 2026. The roles are based at one of two acute main sites at Whiston or Southport, with rotations to Ormskirk, St Helens and Newton.
We welcome applications from current trainees and registered pharmacists, including those with community or other experience who are considering a hospital pharmacist career. Interviews will be conducted for MWL pharmacy services, and applicants’ site preferences will be discussed eer progression from Band 6 to Band 7 is encouraged once local performance criteria are met. Interview Date: 2 February. The JD & PS are currently under AfC review and are subject to change.
Mainduties of the job
The Pharmacy department provides a 7-day service to the Trust. You will participate in the rostered shift system (currently 1 in 4/5) and contribute to late night working and pharmacy on call as required.
The Trust comprises two modern high-performing hospitals, St Helens and Whiston, which have accredited teaching hospital status. The Southport and Ormskirk sites have benefited from refurbishment in 2025–2026 to include new dispensaries, robots and automated dispensing systems. The Pharmacy Department employs approximately 250 staff across 5 sites and has automated dispensing systems in place with an active technology implementation program, including automated labelling and checking.
A new e-prescribing facility has recently been launched.

Rotations include: cardiology, acute care, respiratory, urology, endocrinology, stroke, general medicine, general surgery, haematology, paediatrics, neonates, orthopaedics, gastroenterology, ITU, dispensary, medicines safety, medicines management, education and training.

KEY DUTIES
- Taking drug histories on admission and informing medical staff of discrepancies to ensure continuity of treatment.
- Reviewing medication to ensure safe and effective use.
- Annotating patients' medicines kardex with allergies and administration instructions to ensure safe therapy.
- Formulating individual pharmaceutical care plans and monitoring therapy for safety and efficacy.
- Reviewing and updating care plans based on response, investigations and adverse effects.
- Educating patients on their drug therapy to enable concordance.
- Liaising with nursing and medical staff on drug therapy issues to ensure safety and efficacy.
- Checking patients’ own drugs for suitability to reuse for safety and cost containment.
- Therapeutic drug monitoring for drugs with narrow therapeutic windows.
