The Emergency Department Technician supports nursing staff by performing delegated clinical and clerical tasks in a Level IV Trauma Center emergency department, including patient care, specimen collection, monitoring, and clerical duties. This role requires certification in nursing assistance, medical assisting, or emergency medical technician programs and at least 1-2 years of relevant patient care experience. The technician also assists with admissions, patient transport, equipment maintenance, and contributes to efficient emergency care delivery and patient safety.
DescriptionThe Emergency Department of CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Kleberg is a 12-bed unit organized and designed for the immediate treatment of emergency medical and/or surgical conditions. We have a Medical provider 24 hours per day with An Advance Practitioner 9 hours per day. The Emergency Department had been designated a Level IV Trauma Center by Texas Department of Health. The department is responsible for initiating lifesaving procedures in all types of emergency situations and for providing emergency care for other conditions, including chronic medical problems and minor injuries and illnesses.
After emergency measures are implemented the patient may be transferred within the hospital, to another institution, or discharged home. Our average daily census is 60. The most frequent medical diagnoses seen are R/O Myocardial Infarction, Congestive Heart Failure, Pneumonia , Cardiovascular conditions, cardiopulmonary conditions, Diabetes Mellitus, Hepatitis, Pancreatitis, URI and Urosepsis. The most frequent surgical conditions are appendicitis, fractured hip and spontaneous abortion.
The ER staff work closely with the community by providing education on disease process and safety measures. We also volunteer our time and service to help out our local naval base during events such as “Wings over Texas” and our surrounding areas with events such as, “Beach to Bay.” Our team has been recognized for exceeding the goal for treating a MI or stroke patient.
They have made changes to the overall flow in the ER to improve the door to doctor times and over all patient experience. We have earned the Silver Award from the American Heart Association for our Stroke Care.
Summary:
The Emergency Department Technician requires the skills and knowledge of many areas such as: ED Tech, Patient Registrar, Unit Clerk, and Monitor Tech. The Emergency Department Tech performs a variety of RN delegated tasks under the supervision of a registered nurse. He/she assists the nursing staff in providing patient care in accordance with training, competence and skill. He/she is knowledgeable of and follows all hospital policies and procedures.
Consistently assists the patient care team with maintaining a clean, well-organized, adequately stocked and safe patient environment.

- Commensurate with training, observes patient's condition, recognizes changes in patient status, and reports findings to the RN.
- Escorts stable patients to other departments as required.
- Cleans, procures, and returns equipment and supplies.
- Assists with ordering and maintaining stock items.
- Maintains competency to perform special procedures such as: venipuncture, splinting, staple and suture removal, nonsterile dressing changes, peak expiration flow rate, pulse oximetry, and crutch training.
- As delegated, sets up for Emergency Department procedures and assists the RN as directed.
- As delegated by the RN, operates patient monitoring equipment, records, rhythm strips, runs 12 lead EKGs, biomarkers, and glucometer readings.
- Performs phlebotomy, collects laboratory specimens as ordered, and inserts saline lock under the direction of the RN.
- Demonstrates competence to perform assigned patient care responsibilities in a manner that meets the population-specific and developmental needs of patients served by the department.
