Position: Principal Planner (Gr J)

Principal Planner (Gr J)*

The Principal Planner is a pivotal role in shaping the future development and land use strategies of our community. We seek an experienced and visionary planner who can balance the competing demands of growth and sustainability. This position involves the full spectrum of urban planning activities, including policy development, project management, and stakeholder engagement. As a Principal Planner, you will lead complex planning projects that align with our community's goals and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.

You will collaborate with various departments, government agencies, and the public to create innovative solutions to urban challenges. The ideal candidate should possess a robust analytical background, exceptional communication skills, and a thorough understanding of current planning trends and best practices. You will provide strategic advice to senior management and elected officials, making informed recommendations that resonate with the diverse interests of the community.

Working with a talented team of planners and support staff, you will foster an inclusive atmosphere while driving initiatives that enhance the quality of life for residents.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the preparation and presentation of comprehensive plans, zoning ordinances, and land use regulations.
  • Conduct detailed analyses of planning issues and trends to inform strategic decision‑making.
  • Manage multiple planning projects from inception to completion, ensuring timely and effective outcomes.
  • Facilitate community engagement initiatives to gather public input and support for planning initiatives.
  • Coordinate with external stakeholders, including developers, government agencies, and community organizations, to encourage collaboration on planning projects.
  • Review and assess development applications, ensuring compliance with regulations and community goals.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior planners and staff, fostering professional development and teamwork.
Requirements
  • Master's degree in Urban Planning, Geography, Environmental Sciences, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in urban or regional planning.
  • Strong knowledge of zoning laws, land use planning, and environmental regulations.
  • Proficiency in GIS software and other planning tools and technologies.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex ideas clearly.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead interdisciplinary teams and manage multiple projects effectively.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with a keen attention to detail.
