Bader Chair in Northern Baroque Art History

Queen’s University at Kingston invites applications for the Bader Chair in Northern Baroque Art History, at the rank of Associate or Full Professor (Tenured), with a preferred start date of July 1, 2025.

The successful candidate will be an outstanding scholar with expertise in Northern Baroque art history, demonstrating excellence and innovation in research and teaching. Candidates should be recognized internationally, either as an established leader or a promising emerging scholar, and committed to advancing the field through methodological, theoretical, or historical approaches. Expertise in areas such as colonial, intercultural, transnational contexts, interdisciplinary approaches, media and material culture, curatorial work, or museum studies is considered an asset.

Relevant expertise in technical, scientific, gender, social, environmental humanities, or related areas is also welcome.

The Bader Chair provides a unique opportunity to engage with the Bader Collection at the Agnes Etherington Art Centre, which includes four Rembrandt paintings. Responsibilities include research, teaching, supervising graduate students, and contributing to the department and beyond. The position comes with a renewable research stipend and an expectation to secure external research funding.

Candidates must hold a PhD or equivalent by the start date and demonstrate high-quality scholarly output, potential for independent research, and outstanding teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels. Evidence of collaborative work in interdisciplinary and student-centered environments, as well as service contributions, are also required. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The department is vibrant, research-intensive, and offers undergraduate and graduate programs in art history, conservation, and visual arts. It has strengths in Baroque studies, extensive library holdings, and opportunities for collaboration within the university and with external institutions. The university is investing in its art gallery, with expanded facilities expected in 2026, and has a strong research community including 33 Canada Research Chairs.
