We’re looking for a Planning Technician to join our Development Services Team. This role supports customers, contractors, and staff with planning and zoning related information, applications, and permits. In this role, you’ll help people understand zoning standards, review and intake planning applications, route plans to the right departments, issue permits, and keep everything organized from start to finish. This position works closely with the public every day and plays an important part in keeping the permitting process efficient and accurate.
This role works under the general direction of the Development Services Director and does not supervise others.

Qualifications- High school diploma or GED; additional coursework or training in planning, public administration, construction, permitting, or a related field is desirable.
- Two (2) years of progressively responsible administrative or operations experience, preferably in a government, planning, construction, or permitting environment.
- Experience coordinating or supporting departmental processes, including managing records, handling customer inquiries, and ensuring procedural compliance.
- Proficiency with standard office software and databases, with the ability to learn specialized permitting or planning systems.
- Strong organizational, communication, and customer service skills, with demonstrated ability to work effectively with the public, contractors, or internal departments.
- Must possess a valid Arizona driver’s license or have the ability to obtain one prior to employment.
- Must be physically capable of moving about construction sites and attending occasional after-hours meetings.
- Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.
You’ll be one of the primary faces of the City’s permit counter. You’ll answer zoning and land‑use questions, help customers understand application requirements, walk them through forms, and provide accurate information about ordinances, development standards, setbacks, fees, and processes.
Process & Review (35%)Review incoming planning and zoning applications for completeness, accept plans and documents, assess fees, and issue permits. You’ll also review business license applications for appropriate zoning, prepare zoning verification letters, and maintain accurate records using permitting and tracking systems.
Route & Coordinate (15%)Log, label, track, and route plans, reports, and documents to the correct departments. You’ll monitor the status of applications, keep communication flowing, ensure proper documentation, and support interdepartmental review processes.
Support Operations (10%)Assist with deposits, prepare correspondence and reports, maintain databases and reference materials, help refine procedures, and provide general administrative support. You may also assist with special assignments and serve on committees as needed.
