The Wisconsin Veterans Home at King (WVHK) is recruiting for a limited-term employment (LTE) Nursing Assistant 1 (Trainee). The position begins with an 18‑day training class scheduled to begin April 6, 2026, at the Wisconsin Veterans Home  class is limited to 8 staff. The Home is a 24/7/365 long-term care facility providing care to elderly or disabled veterans and spouses of veterans.

Position Summary

Do you want to get paid while receiving free training to become a Certified Nursing Assistant? This is an entry level certified nursing assistant (CNA), or nursing assistant trainee position. The Nursing Assistant Trainee provides direct and indirect basic nursing care, following individual programs, for up to 60 geriatric, disabled and/or cognitively impaired members at the Wisconsin Veterans Home. Care is provided in accordance with standards set by the American Nurses Association, gerontological nursing standards, federal, state, and VA regulations, and the policies of the Wisconsin Veterans Home and Department of Veterans Affairs.

The trainee participates in and is responsible for providing and maintaining appropriate programs of care, treatment, training, and daily living in assigned areas.

Responsibilities

  • Provide basic nursing care following a written care plan to help meet therapeutic, preventative, restorative, spiritual, psychosocial, cognitive, and rehabilitative needs of members.
  • Assist with cognitive techniques to support memory care needs and maintain the highest functional level.
  • Work as part of the health care team under the supervision of a Nursing Supervisor and licensed nursing staff.

Salary Information

  • Starting wage is $18.98 per hour with additional compensation for nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
  • Nursing Assistant 1 is in pay schedule-pay range 06-10. For current or eligible former State employees, compensation will be set according to the State Compensation Plan at hire.
  • This job does not offer employee benefits.
  • This position is not represented by a bargaining unit.

Job Details

  • Training hours are core: 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. or 6:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m., Monday – Friday (approximately 3 weeks).
  • Shifts with greatest need: PM (1:45 p.m. – 10:15 p.m.) and NOC (10:00 p.m. – 6:00 a.m.). Scheduling is flexible in LTE positions based on departmental need.
  • LTE jobs are limited to 1,039 hours in a 12‑month period and do not include employee benefits.
  • Nursing Assistant Trainees must assist with mobility, wear protective clothing, and use safety equipment; lift, carry, push, pull, reach, stand, sit, kneel, squat; stand and/or walk up to 75% of an eight-hour day. These are essential functions of the position but not an exhaustive list of duties.
  • Criminal background check is conducted prior to an offer of employment.
  • Employment is contingent upon passing a pre‑employment tuberculosis (TB) skin test.

Qualifications

Minimally qualified applicants will:

  • Able to attend all hours of training;
  • 16 years of age on or before the effective date of the appointment, April 6, 2026;
  • Able to communicate effectively with a wide variety of people.

A well-qualified applicant will have experience performing care procedures, problem solving, and using computers.

Per Wisconsin Statute 230.26, Wisconsin residency is required for LTE appointments. The definition of Wisconsin residency for LTE employment can be found here.

Required and preferred qualifications (addressed later in the process) include experience:

  • With professional communication and customer service; and
  • Using computer systems including Microsoft Office; and
  • Screening visitors/staff and verifying access approval; and/or
