PORT OPERATIONS/KEY WEST BIGHT DEPARTMENT MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN II Compensation Details
- GRADE: 12T
- MIN. HOURLY WAGE: $26.29
This position is responsible for maintaining all equipment, grounds and keeping docks in optimal operating condition, repairing them when able, and recommending service calls when repair is beyond his/her ability or knowledge. This is a position of responsibility providing general maintenance for the marina in the areas of electrical, plumbing, mechanical, small construction and office repairs.
Essential Functions (Without Accommodations)- Able to write, read, speak and understand English in order to communicate with the public, make verbal and written reports to superiors and report on needed repairs.
- Able to lift 70 pounds to a 45‑inch height and carry it 100 yards.
- Able to work a forty (40) hour work week and respond to after‑hour emergencies as necessary.
- Able to work outside in all types of weather.
- Able to perform necessary functions in order to resolve an oil spill.
- Able to jump from dock to boat and back.
- Able to swim.
- Special equipment as necessary to perform electrical and plumbing repairs/installations.
- Handheld radio.
- Various hand and power tools.
- Electrical meters and mechanical micrometers
- Inside and outside in all kinds of weather at marina and other areas as assigned.

- Repair plumbing fixtures, small electrical equipment and appliances.
- Perform general labor and equipment operator duties as assigned.
- Paint various types of surfaces.
- Repair and replace pipes and electrical wiring and fixtures.
- Keep docks in working order, including carpentry repairs on both surface and underwater.
- Perform basic carpentry repairs as assigned.
- Clean restrooms and other facilities as directed.
- Maintain a pleasant and courteous manner at all times when dealing with the public.
- Drive a truck, load and unload materials and equipment as required.
- Determine the repair needed, the supplies and equipment needed for the repair, the vendor of material needed and make the purchase if under a certain amount. If the amount is above that, recommend the purchase.
- Use precision measuring instruments.
- Perform special assignments.
- Repair and install water lines.
- Service wall unit air conditioners and electrical circuit panels.
- Repair and rebuild gasoline engines (e.g., lawnmowers, lawn blowers, weed eaters, chainsaws, generators, core bore machines, paint machines, shipping machines, etc.).
- Install and repair locks for doors, cabinets, filing cabinets, etc.
- Enforce all rules and regulations regarding marina activities.
- Ability to paint and patch wood or plaster.
- Ability to repair a variety of plumbing problems, such as replacing or repairing a faucet, clearing a plugged line, etc.
- Ability to follow written and oral directions.
- Ability to repair or replace electrical parts or fixtures.
- Able to perform carpentry jobs, replacements or repairs.
- Able to repair small electric and gasoline powered equipment.
- Able to work forty (40) hour work week and respond to after‑hour emergencies as necessary.
- Knowledgeable of repairs necessary to fuel holding apparatus.
- Experience in the use of tools related to plumbing, electrical, carpentry, masonry, and other maintenance.
- Ability to maintain an effective working relationship with other employees.
- Ability to deal with the general public in a courteous and helpful manner.
- Ability to work without constant supervision, making decisions as permitted on a day‑to‑day basis.
- Ability to use a handheld radio.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) desired but not required.
- Proper apparel and safety clothes/shoes required.
- Must be available to work varying shifts.
- Able to read and understand technical manuals.
- Ability to speak knowledgeably with vendors regarding equipment, demanding quality, price and service while maintaining a good relationship.
- General knowledge of plumbing, troubleshooting to include wiring motors, installing conduit/wiring to code, mechanical, heavy equipment maintenance and air conditioning.
- Demonstrate experience in all required repair/maintenance knowledge, skills and abilities.
- Must possess and maintain a Florida driver’s license.
- Must be available for varied shifts, as necessary.
- Three years or more experience in plumbing, electrical, related construction trade work.
- Three years or more experience in overhauling and maintaining electrical and plumbing equipment, i.e. small compressors, pumps, turbines, etc.
- Must possess or be able to attain certification in the prevention/resolution of oil spills.
- Perform all duties of equivalent or lower graded positions.
