PORT OPERATIONS/KEY WEST BIGHT DEPARTMENT PUMP OUT VESSEL OPERATOR/MAINTENANCE TECH II COMPENSATION DETAILS
- GRADE: 12T
- MIN. HOURLY WAGE: $26.29
This position is responsible for pumping out vessels in the mooring field, maintaining the mooring field, maintaining the pump out boat, all equipment, dingy dock and dingy dock restroom/laundry facility in optimal operating condition, repairing when able, and recommending service calls when repair is beyond his/her ability or knowledge. A responsible position providing general maintenance and preventive maintenance for the marina including electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and general repairs.
ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS (Without Accommodations)
- Able to operate a marine vessel 25 foot or less in all weather conditions.
- Able to operate marine sewer sanitation equipment.
- Able to write, read, speak and understand English in order to communicate with the public, make verbal and written reports to superiors and recommend needed repairs.
- Able to lift 70 pounds to a 45‑inch height and carry it 100 yards.
- Able to work a forty (40) hour work week and respond to after‑hour emergencies as necessary.
- Able to work outside in all types of weather.
- Able to perform necessary functions in order to resolve an oil spill.
- Able to jump from dock to boat and back.
- Able to swim.
- Ability to follow written and oral directions.
- Special equipment as necessary to perform electrical and plumbing repairs/installations.
- Hand‑held radio.
- Various hand and power tools.
- GPS navigation.
- Outside in all kinds of weather at marina and other areas as assigned.

- Pumping out vessels in the mooring field.
- Preventative maintenance to Key West Mooring field.
- Inventory control of vessels entering the mooring field.
- Maintain the dingy dock restroom facility including laundry facility.
- Responsible for evaluating marine mooring systems and determining whether or not there is a need for replacement.
- Operate and maintain Key West Pump out boat.
- Maintain records and removal of sewage from customers’ vessels in Key West Mooring Field.
- Maintain dingy docks in working order, including carpentry repairs both surface and under water.
- Repair plumbing, plumbing fixtures, small electrical equipment and appliances.
- Perform general labor and equipment operator duties as assigned.
- Paint various types of surfaces.
- Perform basic carpentry repairs throughout the marina property.
- Clean restrooms and other facilities as directed.
- Drive a truck, load and unload materials and equipment as required.
- Install and repair locks for doors.
- Enforce all rules and regulations regarding marina activities.
- Responsible for preparations for major storms. If not required to evacuate for a storm, shall be on call as needed during and immediately after the storm for emergency repairs and damage assessment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Experience in operating a marine vessel 25 foot or less in all weather conditions.
- Experience with basic plumbing, carpentry, electrical, small engine repair and appliance repair.
- Ability to repair marine sanitation equipment.
- Ability to maintain an effective working relationship with other employees.
- Ability to deal with the general public in a courteous and helpful manner.
- Ability to work without constant supervision, making decisions as permitted on a day‑to‑day basis.
- Wearing of proper apparel and safety clothes/shoes required.
- Ability to speak knowledgeably with vendors regarding equipment, demanding quality, price and service while maintaining a good relationship.
- Ability to understand city codes and ordinances.
- Must possess a valid Florida driver’s license.
- Must be available for varied shifts, as necessary.
- Three years or more experience in maintenance field.
- Must have understanding of marine knots and rope tying and be able to learn to make repairs to underwater mooring systems.
- Perform all duties of equivalent or lower graded positions.
