About The Role
Do you want to help maximise income for North Northamptonshire Council and make a real difference to your community?
As a Trainee Council Tax Officer, you will play a key part in securing vital income for the authority. Your role will involve the effective administration, billing, and recovery of Council Tax in line with current legislation. You will be trained in all aspects of the Council tax process.
ResponsibilitiesWhat will you be doing?
The purpose of the role is to carry out the administrative tasks involved in the revenues process, including responding to customer queries and supporting through the stages of the process.
Duties Will Include Once Trained- Administer council tax accounts in accordance with current legislation, policy and best practices
- Monitor accounts, process changes of circumstances, make payment arrangements and process
- Update and maintain accounts to ensure recovery processes are followed
- Respond to customer queries, telephone, face to face and in writing
- Review accounts, suggest appropriate recovery action and prepare accounts for enforcement agents
- Produce letters and reports
- Set up direct debit, deal with recalled direct debits
- Check and issue summons
- Check and action refunds
- Identify and set up attachment of earnings
- Manage diary and tracing codes on the system
- Identify appropriate accounts for write‑off, bankruptcies and arrangements
- Promote good relationships with internal and external parties
- Assist with the billing and recovery of NNDR as required
- Demonstrate awareness of equal opportunities
- Comply with council policies and procedures
- Understand the council’s commitment to corporate parenting
For this role you will need:
- English and Maths GCSE Grade C or above or equivalent
- Knowledge of Council Tax
- Must be computer literate
- Good attention to detail
- Ability to work to deadlines and targets
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Fluent English
- Proven ability to work on own initiative with minimum supervision
- Ability to demonstrate awareness/understanding of equal opportunities and other peoples’ behaviours, physical, social and welfare needs
