Electricity Distribution - Network Planner

Join to apply for the Electricity Distribution - Network Planner role at National Grid

Job Introduction

We are currently recruiting for a Grade 5 Network Planner to join us at our Leicester or Kettering depot. Planners design our network and work with our Engineers to construct, reinforce, alter and replace our equipment. The pace is fast and you will provide excellent service, minimising any impact on customers.

Qualifications

To be considered you will need:
English and Maths GCSE Grade C/Level 4 minimum, or Functional Skills Level 2 or above; a Level 2 City & Guilds 2339 or equivalent qualification of the same level; if not already attained, you will need to undertake Level 3 City & Guilds 2339. Evidence of your qualifications will be required prior to appointment.

Note: you may initially be appointed at a lower salary until all relevant courses and training are complete.

Responsibilities

After training you will be hands‑on, responsible for project design, costing, quoting, and the replacement/diversion/reinforcement of existing electricity network assets. You will use your expertise to determine whether the supply chain can handle new electrics in the area. Your duties include:

  • Plan, prepare and deliver new services, alterations and small capital projects
  • Design schemes that align with Engineering Directives and take into account voltage drops
  • Prepare quotations and Connection Agreements for LV connection‑related works
  • Access, remove or avoid site risks
Ideal Candidate

You may already have some low‑voltage experience as an electrician or a Grade 4 Network Planner. Either way, you need to understand our customers—small businesses, local authorities, or house builders—and communicate clearly. You will be resilient, organised, and able to prioritise your workload. A full UK driving licence is required, and ideally you will live within 60 minutes of LE3 1TZ
. Experience using iPads and computers is a must. This technical role will rely on additional software, for which we will provide training.

We understand you may not possess all the skills required at present; you will need confidence and a willingness to reach the necessary standards with appropriate training.

National Grid Electricity Distribution is committed to safeguarding the interests of the Company, colleagues and customers. This role is subject to a satisfactory Barring Service (DBS) check, with different levels of screening and vetting depending on the role. Some roles require a tri‑annual check.

Due to the UK points‑based immigration system, National Grid is unable to offer sponsorship for employment under this system. Applicants must have the legal right to work in the UK without requiring sponsorship now or in the future.

All applications are welcome from candidates who meet these requirements, regardless of race, nationality, or ethnic origin.
