The Department of Family and Community Services, Office of Children's Services (OCS) is recruiting for full-time Protective Service Specialist 1/2/3 in Ketchikan, Alaska.
This position is open to Alaska Residents only.
What You Will Be DoingAs a Protective Service Specialist (PSS), you will be responsible for Child Protection Services in the Family Services unit, the Investigations & Assessment unit, or as a Generalist covering both. Your duties include investigating reports of child abuse and/or neglect, preparing intervention plans, gathering family information, developing child safety plans, assisting parents in addressing protective factors, placing children with relatives or licensed foster homes when appropriate, providing ongoing or in‑home services, writing reports for the Court, collaborating with Tribal/Community partners, maintaining frequent contact with parents and caregivers, and making referrals to other service providers and agencies.

Your first twelve months in the agency are probationary and considered a training period, with formal virtual training, on‑the‑job training with your supervisor, and with other colleagues.
This position will be located in Ketchikan, Alaska. Staff are considered essential and are required to work after hours, on‑call hours, through pandemics, natural disasters, and all holidays that land on their rotational work week. Travel varies based on casework or regional needs: 0‑2 times a month or 0‑2 times a year. The length of travel varies from within the day to overnight, and may involve small aircraft and overnight stays.

- All positions require a valid Alaska Real r’s license and successful completion of a background investigation, including fingerprinting and a criminal records check.
- Vehicle reimbursement is available if a personal vehicle is used for work‑related matters. Current automotive insurance must be in place prior to use of a personal vehicle for State business.
- Relocation reimbursement costs may be provided by the State of Alaska.
- For positions in this job class, a child protective history check will be performed per AS 12.62.160 and/or 13 AAC 68.315.
- The successful candidate may be required to attend multiple training courses normally located in Anchorage.
