Southern Southeast Regional Aquaculture Association (SSRAA)

SSRAA’s mission is to enhance and rehabilitate salmon production in southern Southeast Alaska to the optimum social and economic benefit of salmon users.

The Southern Southeast Regional Aquaculture Association (SSRAA) has openings for two Lead Maintenance Technicians with the Facilities and Infrastructure Department
. Position is based in Ketchikan, AK.

SSRAA operates seven hatcheries and several remote release sites within southern Southeast Alaska. This position requires travel by boat and small aircraft. Desired skills include knowledge of construction techniques including: carpentry, welding, plumbing, basic electrical, maintaining preventative maintenance records, use of hand and power tools, and project planning. In addition to maintenance responsibilities, this position may, on occasion, assist with various fish culture activities and will be expected to perform other duties as assigned.

The ideal candidate must have the ability to develop healthy working relationships with vendors, contractors, co-workers, other SSRAA departments, and have the willingness to share knowledge and skills. The ability to obtain an Alaska Driver’s License is required and all applicants will undergo a background check.

Lead Maintenance Technician – Facilities & Infrastructure

FLSA Exempt 29 CFR 784.100 Sec 13(a) (5): Exempt Hourly

Reports to: Facilities Engineer and/or Assistant Facilities Engineer

Location: Based in Ketchikan

Summary of Position: Under the direct supervision of the department managers, this position performs required maintenance and construction functions at SSRAA sites as assigned, which may include but not be limited to: preventative maintenance, equipment repair, construction projects, and assisting in the maintenance of a parts and supplies inventory. Supervision duties and scheduling of this position may transfer as needed to hatchery managers through consultation and collaboration of those department managers and the Facilities & Infrastructure managers balancing all SSRAA needs.

Responsibilities & Duties:

  • Performs maintenance and repair at all SSRAA sites as needed. Organizes and records maintenance schedules on major equipment. Provides input on maintenance and repair needs for annual and mid-year budget documents. Trains personnel in proper maintenance and repair techniques. Provides maintenance and repair summary to the supervisor at the end of the month.
  • Performs a variety of construction and fabrication projects at all SSRAA sites. Develops plans and material lists for projects as assigned. Orders supplies for projects and assists in project prioritization. Provides project summary to supervisor at the end of the month.
  • May supervise maintenance technicians, seasonal workers, and fish culturists assigned to a maintenance task.
  • Perform other duties as assigned which may include fish culture duties as needed, such as but not limited to: harvest, eggtake, and ponding.

Requirements

Skills & Abilities

Required:

  • Successful work history in multiple trades including skills in plumbing, welding, electrical, mechanical repair, and carpentry.
  • Experience in construction and maintenance projects.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel or compatible equivalent.

Preferable, but not required skills and experience:

  • Working knowledge of fish culture practices and hatchery operations and or commercial fisheries experience
  • Small boat operation
  • Working knowledge of small hydro electric systems
  • Competence with developing cost estimates and making-ordering materials lists for maintenance projects.
  • Rigging experience
