Job Description
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation is recruiting a Wildlife Biologist 3 (Ketchikan Area Biologist) located in Ketchikan, AK. The position is responsible for wildlife management in Game Management Units 1A and 2, Prince of Wales Island and surrounding islands, and for overseeing the Ketchikan Area Wildlife office.
Responsibilities- Oversight and supervision of wildlife management activities, including staff such as an Assistant Area Management Biologist, Program Technician, Fish & Wildlife Technician 4, Wildlife Biologist 1/2‑permanent staff, and volunteers.
- Monitoring and managing wildlife populations (wolf, deer, black and brown bear, moose, mountain goat, furbearers) and implementing management programs.
- Design, budget, and implement wildlife management programs such as the Alaska Board of Game and Federal Subsistence Board.
- Oversee all aspects of the DWC area office operations and respond to public wildlife safety concerns.

Knowledge and experience designing, planning, and implementing sound wildlife mammal population programs. - Wildlife Capture

Knowledge and experience capturing, immobilizing, and performing physical examinations of large mammal species. - Biological Data Collection
:
Knowledge of collecting biological data via aerial and ground surveys, summarizing data, and preparing technical reports. - Wildlife Conflict Management
:
Experience addressing human‑wildlife conflicts and finding solutions. - Oral and Written Communication
:
Skill in answering public inquiries and explaining regulations. - Presenting Information
:
Experience presenting to advisory committees, regulatory boards, and public meetings. - Supervision
:
Experience assigning work, setting priorities, evaluating performance, and training staff.
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management; AND one year of full‑performance professional‑level biologist experience. Professional biologist work experience is met by service as a Fishery Biologist 2, Wildlife Biologist 2, Habitat Biologist 2, or Fisheries Geneticist 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.
Substitution:
- At least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management, 16 of which are upper‑division courses.
- At least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in at least two of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.

“Upper division courses” means courses that are specialized, in-depth and advanced. Such courses emphasize problem‑solving, analytical thinking skills, and theoretical applications, with depth and rigor in a discipline’s theories and methods; specialization in a particular field or profession; refinement of general education; and/or development of specific intellectual and professional skills. Upper division courses are commonly identified in college catalogs as 300 level and higher.
