Join us in Ketchikan, Alaska – where work meets adventure! Peace Health Ketchikan Medical Center is seeking candidates for a temporary Certified First Assistant role.

Job Details
  • Role:
    Full‑time Temporary Certified First Assistant
  • Schedule:

    8‑hour day shifts, 40 hours per week
  • Hospital:
    Ketchikan Medical Center – 25‑bed critical access hospital with a Level IV trauma center
  • Units: 4 OR suites (orthopedic, general, gynecologic, pediatric dental, ENT, trauma, and urology surgeries)
  • Assignment length:
    Typically 13 weeks with option to extend
Compensation & Benefits
  • Wage range: $44.58 – $66.88 per hour, based on experience
  • 12% Temporary Assignment Differential

What You’ll Do

Responsible for practicing in collaboration with and at the direction of the surgeon during the intraoperative phase of the perioperative experience. Collaborate with the surgical team to perform a safe operation with optimal outcomes.

  • Accumulate the appropriate surgical armamentarium.
  • Position the patient on the operating room table.
  • Prep the patient for surgical procedures (shave, catheterize, drape, etc.).
  • Provide exposure for the surgical procedure.
  • Provide hemostasis by suction, cauterization, clamping, suturing, or ligation.
  • Administer local anesthesia as directed by the surgeon.
  • Place dressings.
  • Maintain accurate, legible, and confidential records; complete documentation pertinent to the patient medical record.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
What You Bring
  • Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology Program.
  • Completion of an accredited Certified First Assistant Program and a mentored internship with a minimum of 120 clinical hours demonstrating competency as a CFA.
  • Certified First Assistant (CFA) certification (or, in lieu, Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) and/or Surgical Assistant Certified (SA‑C)).
  • Basic Life Support certification for healthcare providers.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum one year of demonstrated training and experience performing CFA tasks.
  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification.
Skills
  • Well organized, detail‑oriented, and self‑motivated. (Required)
  • Ability to coordinate activities and work collaboratively with others. (Required)
  • Ability to execute detailed procedures with accuracy and precision. (Required)
  • Basic computer and keyboard skills, including MS Office applications. (Required)
  • Understanding of operating room protocols. (Required)
Working Conditions Lifting
  • Patient handling no greater than 35 lbs. without assistive equipment (NIOSH).
  • Ability to move around area with occasional sitting.
  • Frequent manual dexterity and tactile sensitivity.
  • Frequent push/pull/carry/stoop/bend/reach.
  • Occasional kneeling.
Environmental Conditions
  • Exposure to biohazard, body fluids, and airborne particles.
  • Time spent on site in a medical/hospital setting.
Mental/Visual
  • Vision and hearing within normal limits (glasses, contacts, hearing aids permitted).
  • Ability to communicate and exchange accurate information.
