Responsibilities

Work involves keeping abreast of current transportation design innovations, modifications, laws, regulations, policies and procedures; overseeing:

  • Construction operations in the area office, including review of shop drawings, compliance with regulations, approval of letting advertising and conducting pre-construction meetings and public hearings.
  • Design Section operations in the area office; overseeing inspection of construction projects and temporary traffic control.
  • Maintenance sections operations, planning and budgeting with maintenance supervisors and district staff, right-of-way plan preparation, monitoring acquisition processes to coordinate project letting, utility relocation/adjustment inspection, material testing and construction engineering.
  • Approving and inspecting driveway, utility and drainage fill permits, and monitoring removal of illegal signs.
  • Approving project candidate submission for program calls.
  • Directing administrative and business operation activities, including human resources, training programs, inventory oversight, safety, preparation and monitoring of budgets.
  • Directing the development of work programs to meet transportation needs within the assigned geographical area.
  • Monitoring signing, pavement marking and striping to ensure compliance with standards.
  • Overseeing, coordinating and monitoring contractors' compliance with plans and specifications; authorizing payment of estimates; resolving differences, disputes and claims; preparing and approving expenditures.
  • Planning, preparing and executing emergency procedures, preparedness and response for a geographic area; responding to office/incident locations to direct/oversee activities for emergency situations/conditions.
  • Providing direction for construction projects and contract change negotiations.
  • Representing the Department to the public; answering inquiries from governmental officials, making media presentations, speaking at public functions and participating in other civic endeavors.
  • Reviewing all plans prepared by the area office before transmitting to district headquarters; providing technical expertise.
  • Reviewing, recommending and approving change orders.
