Summary

The South Texas VA Health Care System is seeking a Chief Medical Officer in Kerrville - Texas. Recruitment or Relocation Incentive may be authorized for highly qualified individuals. Podiatrist should apply to CAZM-JMS.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet the basic requirements below and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Pending trainees may be considered but cannot be hired until all requirements are fulfilled.

Basic Requirements
  • United States Citizenship:
    Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education:

    A Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
  • License:
    Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia.
  • Residency Training:
    Completion of an accredited core specialty training program approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, qualifying for board certification.
  • Board Certification:
    Completion of board certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine or the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine within four years of initial appointment.
  • English Language Proficiency:
    Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Preferred Experience:

    Planning, developing, and directing all administrative and clinical functions of a clinical service; ensuring high‑quality, efficient, timely, and appropriate care; serving on committees; participation in quality assurance programs; experience with graduate and undergraduate medical education; driving a culture of improvement; developing teams toward shared goals.
  • Physical Requirements:

    Light lifting and carrying under 15 pounds; hearing (aid permitted); ability to perform privileges; mental and emotional stability; ability to independently perform a physical exam as appropriate to the position.

Duties
  • This is an Open Continuous Announcement & remains open until June 12, 2026, or until all positions are filled.
  • The first cut‑off date is January 30, 2026. Eligible applications received after that date will be referred at regular intervals or as additional vacancies occur.

  • The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) is responsible for the direct management and oversight of clinical and administrative operations within the Kerrville Medical Center.
  • The medical center provides primary care and specialty health services, including mental health care, geriatric evaluation, foot care, dental services, kidney care and dialysis, urology, palliative care and hospice, laboratory services.
  • The CMO reports directly to the Chief of Staff.
  • The role includes monitoring, reviewing, and assigning healthcare providers’ workload; evaluating clinical effectiveness and efficiency; and responsibility for clinical performance measures.
  • He/She works closely with other clinical leaders to ensure optimization of resources and delivery of effective and efficient patient care.
  • Participation in administrative, management, quality assurance, and other activities, meetings, or committees as necessary or assigned.
  • Minimum 10% direct patient care, varying with organizational needs.
  • Duties and responsibilities include ensuring each patient receives quality care within clinic limits and resources, obtaining referrals to other VA facilities or community care when resources are unavailable, participating in direct patient care and serving as a role model, ensuring appropriate use of staffing, space, equipment, materials, systems, and support services, ensuring care in a safe and therapeutic environment, ensuring caregiver responsibility, coordinating care and transfer to other facilities, ensuring enforcement of Medical Center policy, rules, regulations, and bylaw, meeting Joint Commission performance improvement requirements, building relationships with community leaders,…
