Thomson-Hood Veterans Center is a 285-bed long-term care facility that has served more than 2,782 Veterans from all branches of the armed forces since opening on August 25, 1991. It is the largest facility operated by the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs.
Responsibilities- Plans, organizes and conducts therapeutic recreation programs and activities within the recreation program for an institution.
- Completes quarterly reviews on each resident to monitor their recreational needs and participation.
- Develops treatment plans to meet residents’ individual needs and attends treatment team meetings.
- Organizes and supervises recreational outings including supervision of residents, staff and volunteers involved in outings.
- Completes initial assessments on new residents to assess their therapeutic recreational needs.
- Directs activity aides during therapeutic recreational outings. Responsible for maintaining therapeutic recreational calendars for the assigned unit.

Minimum RequirementsEDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor’s degree in recreation, physical education, special education or a related field.

Experience in planned recreation, physical education, special education or a related field will substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Working ConditionsTypically works in an institutional or hospital facility. Work is of moderate physical nature and often in an outdoor setting, conducting recreational activities usually with hospital patients or inmates.
Probationary PeriodThis job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
