Vehicle Maintenance Managers are responsible for the management of the vehicle maintenance staff at a facility. This position manages the facility's maintenance function in order to maintain a safe, reliable, and cost-effective fleet of vehicles and/or equipment, and an adequate supply of containers. Managers hire, train, coach, evaluate, counsel, and manage the performance of the facility's maintenance staff with an emphasis on safety and productivity.

Responsibilities of Position:
  • Manages the maintenance staff, including hiring, training, scheduling work assignments, performance management, discipline, and authorization of overtime.
  • Regularly communicates with operations and others regarding the status of fleet vehicles, containers, and/or other equipment.
  • Controls maintenance costs relating to personnel, purchasing, inventory control, and outsourcing of repairs. Works with the controller and participates in the budget process.
  • Identifies trends in road calls, breakdowns, and shop hours and responds appropriately.
  • Maintains an ongoing preventive maintenance program to ensure vehicle safety and operating efficiency.
  • Trains and directs employees to improve their overall performance.
  • Monitors and enforces quality and safety standards and ensures all compliance goals are met or exceeded.
  • Ensures completion of daily duties and ensures that all productivity goals are met or exceeded.
  • Performs and conducts performance evaluations, monitors and tracks employee attendance, and completes disciplinary actions/meetings.
  • Maintains proper records and files, including all compliance.
  • Conducts investigations for accidents and injuries.
  • Conducts employee observations to ensure safety and procedures are being followed.
  • Prepares and submits/presents accurate and timely reports as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by management.
Supervisory Responsibility:
  • This position will manage 1 to 10 employees.
Skills & Abilities Needed for Position:
  • Knowledge of OSHA and DOT, preferred.
  • Computer skills; working knowledge of Windows applications.
  • Must be able to work independently, make decisions, prioritize work, and resolve problems.
  • Excellent verbal & written communication skills.
  • Maintains a positive work atmosphere by performing and communicating in a manner that promotes good relationships with customers, clients, co‑workers, employees, and managers.
Experience & Knowledge Needed for Position:
  • 3 - 5 years of previous management experience.
  • 3 - 5 years performing repairs and maintenance on diesel‑powered, heavy vehicles, hydraulics, equipment, and related components preferred.
  • Experience with maintaining parts inventory.
  • Familiarity with the use of repair manuals, electrical wiring, and schematics is necessary to troubleshoot.
Additional Working Conditions/Aspects:
  • Possible exposure to high traffic conditions and/or tight driving areas.
  • Exposure to residential and commercial waste.
  • Ability to travel between offices, as required.
  • Ability to work flexible hours; overtime, weekends, and/or holidays.
  • Must be available for 24‑hour emergency calls.
  • Legally eligible to work in the United States.
  • Valid driver's license (if applicable).
  • Must successfully complete pre‑employment testing.
  • Must be able to read and speak the English language.
