Vehicle Maintenance Managers are responsible for the management of the vehicle maintenance staff at a facility. This position manages the facility's maintenance function in order to maintain a safe, reliable, and cost-effective fleet of vehicles and/or equipment, and an adequate supply of containers. Managers hire, train, coach, evaluate, counsel, and manage the performance of the facility's maintenance staff with an emphasis on safety and productivity.

- Manages the maintenance staff, including hiring, training, scheduling work assignments, performance management, discipline, and authorization of overtime.
- Regularly communicates with operations and others regarding the status of fleet vehicles, containers, and/or other equipment.
- Controls maintenance costs relating to personnel, purchasing, inventory control, and outsourcing of repairs. Works with the controller and participates in the budget process.
- Identifies trends in road calls, breakdowns, and shop hours and responds appropriately.
- Maintains an ongoing preventive maintenance program to ensure vehicle safety and operating efficiency.
- Trains and directs employees to improve their overall performance.
- Monitors and enforces quality and safety standards and ensures all compliance goals are met or exceeded.
- Ensures completion of daily duties and ensures that all productivity goals are met or exceeded.
- Performs and conducts performance evaluations, monitors and tracks employee attendance, and completes disciplinary actions/meetings.
- Maintains proper records and files, including all compliance.
- Conducts investigations for accidents and injuries.
- Conducts employee observations to ensure safety and procedures are being followed.
- Prepares and submits/presents accurate and timely reports as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned by management.
- This position will manage 1 to 10 employees.
- Knowledge of OSHA and DOT, preferred.
- Computer skills; working knowledge of Windows applications.
- Must be able to work independently, make decisions, prioritize work, and resolve problems.
- Excellent verbal & written communication skills.
- Maintains a positive work atmosphere by performing and communicating in a manner that promotes good relationships with customers, clients, co‑workers, employees, and managers.
- 3 - 5 years of previous management experience.
- 3 - 5 years performing repairs and maintenance on diesel‑powered, heavy vehicles, hydraulics, equipment, and related components preferred.
- Experience with maintaining parts inventory.
- Familiarity with the use of repair manuals, electrical wiring, and schematics is necessary to troubleshoot.
- Possible exposure to high traffic conditions and/or tight driving areas.
- Exposure to residential and commercial waste.
- Ability to travel between offices, as required.
- Ability to work flexible hours; overtime, weekends, and/or holidays.
- Must be available for 24‑hour emergency calls.
- Legally eligible to work in the United States.
- Valid driver's license (if applicable).
- Must successfully complete pre‑employment testing.
- Must be able to read and speak the English language.
