JOB DESCRIPTION

Position Title: CUSTODIAN

Responsible To: Principal

Basic Function: The custodian is responsible to perform custodial work for the care, maintenance, protection, and preservation of the school plant, its contents, and grounds.

Performance Responsibilities:

Clean classrooms, departmental offices, teachers’ lunchroom, and guidance suite, performing minor repairs as needed. This includes the following:

Wash pupil desks, chairs and tables.
Align the desks, seats, and tables in proper order.
Sweep tile floors daily, and wash floors periodically.
Vacuum carpeted floors (if in building or assigned area).
Empty pencil sharpeners and wastebaskets.
Clean chalkboards, trays, and erasers.
Clean doors, door plates, thermostats, and light switches.
Clean bookcases, teacher desks and chairs, tables and other furniture.
Wash off wall marks.
Wash both sides of glass in doors and glass walls, and also both sides of exterior windows (including sills, wells, and metal surfaces).
In science classrooms, clean black tops on laboratory tables, and clean all glass cupboard doors.
Clean window shades or blinds, and adjust uniformly.
Clean light fixtures and replace defective parts and bulbs (ballast not included).
Clean univents.

Clean restrooms, performing minor repairs as needed. This includes the following:

Clean and disinfect commodes, urinals, sinks, and partitions.
Empty all waste containers.
Replace paper towels and toilet tissue, and clean and refill soap dispensers.
Wash mirrors, shelves, and fixtures.
Sweep and wet mop floors daily, scrub periodically.
Clean light fixtures and components, and replace defective parts.
Vacuum ceiling.
Scrub walls with disinfectant solution.
Wash both sides of glass (if any) in doors and exterior windows (including sills, wells, and metal surfaces).
Wash doors and door plates.
Perform minor repairs as needed.

Clean stairways, entrance halls, and hallways, performing minor repairs as needed. This includes the following:

Sweep and dust railings, stairs, and landings.
Clean both sides of the interior and exterior glass windows and doors.
Clean doors, door plates, and metal surfaces.
Sweep mats (vacuum fabric mats).
Clean walls.
Empty trash containers.
Clean and sanitize drinking fountains.
Dust and clean outside of lockers, and periodically wash the insides (during the summer).
Sweep, scrub, wax, and buff floors, stairs, landings, entrance halls, and hallways.
Clean light fixtures and components, and replace defective parts.
Close and lock windows and exterior doors.

Clean auditorium. This includes the following:

Sweep, scrub, wax, and buff tile floors.
Vacuum carpeted areas.
Wash markings on chairs and seats.
Clean stage and backstage area.
Dust all horizontal and semi-horizontal surfaces where dust accumulates noticeably.
Clean and repair light fixtures.
Clean interior and exterior doors and door plates.
Clean both sides of the interior and exterior glass windows and doors.
Perform minor repairs as needed.

Clean cafeteria (commons) area. This includes the following:

All cleaning tasks applicable from numbers one through five listed on proceeding pages.
Wash chairs and tables.
Align chairs and tables in proper order.
Clean glass in trophy cases.
Dust pictures, paintings, and wall plaques.
Dust and clean overhang.

Clean gymnasium. This includes the following:

Dust mop the gymnasium floor.
Dust bleachers and wash off markings when necessary.
Wash both sides of the interior and exterior glass windows and doors.
Dust all horizontal and semi-horizontal surfaces where dust accumulates noticeably.
Clean light fixtures and components, and replace defective parts.
Clean and sanitize drinking fountains.

Inform the school principal of items that require repair beyond this capability.

Keep walkways, steps, and sidewalks outside the school building free from ice, snow or debris.
