Department: Vanceburg Family Health Center
Shift/schedule: Full Time (40 hrs/wk)

GENERAL SUMMARY

Works under the supervision of the Family Health Center Manager and/or Office Supervisor. The primary job function of the Lab Technician Assistant – Physician Office is to perform venipunctures and other specimen collections for Laboratory testing. Performs and processes electrocardiograms. Performs non‑complex diagnostic testing under the supervision of Lab Manager. Prepares specimens for transport. Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School Diploma or successful completion of an equivalent High School Exam – Required
  • Basic chemistry and biology – Preferred
  • BLS within 90 days of hire – Required
  • Three to six months of laboratory experience – Preferred
  • Previous phlebotomy experience – Preferred

JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

The following is a summary of the major job duties of this job. Other duties may be performed, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below. Specific activities may change from time to time.

  • Identifies self and department and explains the procedure to be performed to the patient.
  • Verifies patient identification. Performs phlebotomies including venipunctures and finger sticks on adults and children/infant heel sticks.
  • Follows all safety and infection control policies when performing procedures.
  • Labels, dates, and processes obtained specimens.
  • Centrifuges specimens. Aliquots specimens for testing when appropriate.
  • Processes microbiology specimens as required.
  • Runs collection lists. Prepares laboratory pendings and specimens for transport to other sections and to reference laboratories.
  • Performs and processes electrocardiograms.
  • Cleans and stocks work area as needed.
  • Prepares and labels simple solutions for use in diagnostic testing.
  • Performs clerical and computer functions as needed.
  • Obtains accurate patient demographic and insurance information. Obtains signed consent for treatment from patient.
  • Performs a “quick registration” in the Laboratory Computer System.
  • Orders laboratory/phlebotomy supplies as needed.
  • Performs non‑complex testing physiochemical analysis and occult blood testing on biological specimens.
  • Performs and documents Quality Control and daily instrument maintenance.
  • Communicates needs of the physician office to the laboratory management team.
  • Participates in training and orientation of new employees and students.
  • Operates wheelchairs, carts, beds, and transports patients.
  • Demonstrates positive, supportive behavior to members of healthcare team, patient and families, through effective communication skills, appearance, and professional demeanor.
  • Demonstrates ability to respond to changing workload related to patient census, ability to rapidly problem solve and set priorities.
  • Responds to crisis in a calm, efficient manner, directing others concisely.
  • Participates in developing own personal goals.
