Overview
The Director of Laboratory Services is responsible for managing the laboratory in a manner to assure that tests to obtain data for diagnosis and treatment of diseases are performed accurately and effectively.
ResponsibilitiesManages the department in an efficient manner by planning, organizing, and controlling assigned activities in the department.
Recommends new procedures and improvements of existing ones.
Determines staffing needs and patterns and recommends appropriate staffing levels and classifications.
Determines work assignments and priorities, and schedules coverage of lab.
Develops and evaluates or assists in the development and evaluation of each section's quality control program.
Maintains adequate inventory of supplies.
Prepares department budget in cooperation with Administration.
Establishes goals for the department and evaluates employee performance.
Interviews prospective personnel and makes recommendations on hiring and firing and coordinates the orientation of new employees in procedures and hospital policy.
Develops procedures and problem solving in conjunction with other hospital departments, Medical Staff and Administration.
Coordinates all departmental in-service education activities.
Provides statistical data to Administration accurately and on a timely basis, and insures proper maintenance of department records.
Provides support to laboratory staff in communicating with instrumentation companies to ensure that instruments are properly maintained and upgraded or replaced as needed.
May participate in shift coverage and take call-in when necessary.
Performs other duties as assigned.
QualificationsA Master's Degree from an accredited institution with a major in one of the chemical, physical, or biological sciences, and subsequent to graduation, has at least four years of pertinent laboratory experience of which not less than two years has been spent working in the designated specialty in a clinical laboratory plus two (2) years in a supervisory position.
OR
A baccalaureate degree in Medical Technology which includes successful completion of a program in an CAHEA approved School of Medical Technology and certified by a national certified agency recognized by the profession of medical technology plus at least four years of pertinent clinical laboratory experience; plus two (2) years in a supervisory position.
OR
A baccalaureate degree from an accredited educational institution with a major in one of the chemical, physical, or biological sciences; and, subsequent to graduation - (a) has had at least six years of pertinent laboratory experience in a hospital clinical laboratory, with a director at the doctoral level; and, (b) has successfully completed pertinent courses which, when combined with the foregoing experience, will provide technical and professional knowledge comparable to that of #2 above plus two (2) years in the supervision.
AND
Must have knowledge of all functions of the laboratory.
Must maintain skills and knowledge by participating in continuing education.
Must maintain state licensure, as required
