Position Summary

Performs and reports a variety of simple to complex laboratory procedures and tests, involving limited independent judgment and interpretation. Uses scientific techniques and skills to operate sophisticated electronic laboratory equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

Work Experience

Previous Medical Laboratory Technician experience preferred.

Education

Must be eligible for Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) certification as required by regulations issued (Federal Register, Vol. 39, No. 183, September 19, 1974).

Certifications/Licensure

Certification as Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or an equivalent agency is required within one year of hire or placement. Employees hired or placed prior to May 1, 2024, are required to obtain certification within 18 months of hire or placement.

Job Specific Performance Standards

Performs venipuncture and capillary collections; processes specimens.

Performs and reports EKGs and urinalysis testing.

Performs and reports, according to established procedures, a variety of laboratory tests and quality control measures involving limited independent judgment and interpretation. Utilizes mathematical skills, manual dexterity, analytical and scientific techniques, and operates sophisticated electronic laboratory equipment in areas such as chemistry, hematology, immunohematology, immunology, and microbiology.

Assists with training of Laboratory Assistants.

Performs duties of Clerical and Laboratory Assistants during their absence.

Inspects quality control and maintains equipment, supplies, and reagents to ensure valid results.

Manages and operates laboratory equipment safely, following standard precautions.

Participates in continuing education and self-education activities.

Maintains current knowledge of hospital policies, JCAHO, state, and other regulatory requirements.
