At the Kentucky Department of Corrections, the Division of Education plays a crucial role supporting the Department and the reentry of offenders back into the community. The mission of the Division of Education is to prepare every offender through the advancement of academic achievement and work ready skills for successful reentry.
As education corrections professionals, it is our job to assist in the rehabilitation and reentry of offenders by working within the Department, with community partners, and state agencies to increase community safety and reduce recidivism rates. The corrections education specialist II will provide support and direct instruction for the Division of Education regarding special education services, and in planning, facilitating, and coordinating educational opportunities within the correctional environment.
ResponsibilitiesInclude, But Are Not Limited To, The Following
- Provides oversight of the development and implementation of daily operations of special education programming and high school diploma pathway within the DOC.
- Assists with assessment and targeted instruction services to inmates.
- Prepares individual education programs (IEP), individual learning plans (ILP), lesson plans, and provides targeted instruction to inmates.
- Develops and maintains student records.
- Reports on student attainment and progress.
- Assists with federal and state assessments and reporting.
- Provides guidance and assistance to education staff regarding special education and the high school diploma pathway.
- Serves as the co-chairperson for the Admissions Release Committee (ARC).
- Coordinates special programs and ensures proper timely student identification, timelines, evaluations, etc. are met.
- Performs other assigned duties as required.
The ideal candidate should possess current special education credentials/certifications, strong verbal and written communication skills, organizational skills, technology skills, and have displayed the ability to complete work related activities in a professional manner. The ideal candidate should be able to multi-task with the ability to plan, pay attention to detail, think critically and analyze data to forecast positive outcomes. This candidate should possess the ability to work well in a team-oriented environment and adapt to the ever- changing needs of the Department, Division, and facilities.
Minimum RequirementsEDUCATION:
Graduate of a college or university with a Master's Degree in education (academic or vocational).

Probationary PeriodThis job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
