Title Elementary and/or Middle School Guidance Counselor
Reports to Principal
Job Goal To help students overcome problems that impede learning and to assist them in making educational, occupational, and life plans that hold promise-or their personal fulfillment as mature and responsible men and women.
Performance
Qualifications
- Holds a valid Kentucky certification appropriate for elementary guidance
- Has a minimum of three years of successful teaching
- Has a master’s degree and advanced graduate coursework in guidance counseling or curriculum (preferred)
- Has demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, faculty, and administration
- Has experience in test administration and interpretation
- Has experience in working with Special Education Admission and Release Committees
Responsibilities
- Is responsible for preparation of the annual Guidance Plan required by the state
- Assists in the evaluation of the guidance program annually for the State Department
- Works with faculty on instruction and curriculum
- Counsels students regarding strengths and weaknesses and helps them to make decisions and choices
- Conducts regularly scheduled group guidance sessions and maintains log
- Provides personal counseling for the students and maintains log
- Is responsible for testing and interpreting results to students, parents, faculty, and community as appropriate
- Maintains cumulative record folders containing results of observation, tests, counseling sessions, etc. (primary)
- Serves on Admission and Release Committees for special education placement, when possible
- Makes referrals to school supportive services and community agencies as appropriate
- Obtains and distributes current information regarding career education (Middle School Primarily)
- Cooperates with teachers and principals regarding students with special attendance and behavioral problems
- Assists with scheduling as requested by the principal (middle school only)
- Performs other duties consistent with the position as assigned by the principal
