Job Description
University Housing operates service desks in Boothe and East Village, both staffed by Student Desk Assistants. Desk Assistants play a vital role in the University Housing operation, offering support to students. These student employees serve as key resources, administrators, and security supporters for residents.
Primary Responsibilities
Desk Assistants are primarily responsible for articulating to students the values, philosophy, and policies of University Housing and the university, and represent University Housing as a role model in all facets of university life. While performing the duties of this job, a Desk Assistant is regularly required to:
- Effectively communicate and give directions to students
- Ensure building security by monitoring access points
- Prevent unauthorized individuals from entering the dorms
- Read and understand policy and procedure manuals
- Prepare reports and correspondences as needed
- Respond to duty situations according to university protocol
- Work independently without continuous supervision
- Meet deadlines set by housing professional staff
- Respond immediately to issues and concerns of residents
- Attend weekly staff meetings to stay informed and engaged
- Perform check‑ins and check‑outs for residents
- Complete equipment check‑ins and check‑outs
Working with Desk Managers (DMs), other Desk Assistants (DAs), Resident Assistants (RAs), and other housing staff is frequent and common.
Desk Assistants can regularly lift and/or move up to 20 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and are able to move through a three‑story building via stairs, climb, and descend stairs while carrying supplies, materials, and/or furniture as needed.
Qualifications
Per NKU’s Employment Policy, U.S. Citizen students are permitted to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, provided they are enrolled in at least six credit hours. International students may work up to 20 hours per week during the academic year and must be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours. Desk Assistants are required to be available for weekend and overnight shifts during both the academic semesters.
During the summer and breaks, students can work up to 35 hours per week, provided they are enrolled in the previous Spring semester or intend to enroll in the upcoming Fall semester. A 2.5 cumulative and semester GPA for undergraduate candidates; 3.5 cumulative and semester GPA for graduate candidates.
In addition, students must be in good standing with the university financially and behaviorally. All interested students must fill out an online student employment application and attach a resume.
Any candidate who is offered this position will be required to undergo a pre‑employment criminal background check as mandated by state law.
