Description:

At the Kentucky Department of Corrections, the Division of Education plays a crucial role supporting the department and the reentry of offenders back into the community. The mission of the Division of Education is to prepare every offender through the advancement of academic achievement and work ready skills for successful reentry. As education corrections professionals, it is our job to assist in the rehabilitation and reentry of offenders by working within the department, with community partners, and state agencies to increase community safety and reduce recidivism rates.
The corrections vocational instructor will provide support in planning, facilitating, and coordinating educational opportunities to offenders within the correctional environment.
- Provides targeted instruction (classroom and performance based) in plumbing to students and adult inmates in a correctional setting, which includes promoting education during inmate orientation and to the general population.
- Maintains order and discipline in the classroom.
- Delivers instruction through multiple modalities using a variety of technology platforms i.e., distance, virtual, tablets, smart board, etc.
- Develops lesson plans on educational topics within assigned correctional facility and adheres to approved curriculum, expected outcomes, and program requirements.
- Submits all transcripts and documents to the appropriate agencies for review and approval.
- Advises students as needed and assesses their attainment using reliable criteria.
- Maintains federal and state reports regarding student assessment and progress.
- Makes appropriate referrals when needed.
- Coordinates special programs regarding educational needs and assessments within the department.
- Enters daily attendance into the Kentucky Offender Management System (KOMS) and maintains student information and data.
- Maintains an accurate and complete inventory of all classroom equipment, tools, computers, and toxic- caustic supplies used within the classroom, and is responsible for monitoring student use of these items.
- Participates in professional development activities to improve teaching skills.
- Attends necessary educational staff meetings and is actively involved in continuing career development.
- Performs other assigned duties as required.
Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with an associate's degree.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR
SKILLS:
Three (3) years of trade-related experience.
Substitute EDUCATION for
EXPERIENCE:
Additional education will substitute for up to two (2) years of the trade-related experience.
Substitute EXPERIENCE for
EDUCATION:
Additional experience in a trade-related field will substitute for the education on a year-for-year basis.

Working ConditionsWork is typically performed in a classroom/shop setting within a correctional institution.
Probationary PeriodThis job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
