Position OverviewWe are seeking a qualified Dental Assistant to provide onsite dental support services within a Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBOP) correctional healthcare environment. The Dental Assistant will support dental providers during procedures, ensure proper sterilization and accountability of instruments, and assist with dental records in a secure institutional setting. The position requires professionalism, adaptability, and the ability to work with a diverse inmate population while adhering to strict federal and institutional regulations.
Key Responsibilities- Assist the Dentist during routine and specialized dental procedures
- Prepare treatment rooms and dental instruments prior to procedures
- Maintain strict accountability, cleaning, and sterilization of dental instruments
- Utilize and maintain proficiency in the Bureau of Prisons Electronic Medical Record (BEMR) system
- Conduct oneself professionally at all times within a correctional environment
- Comply with all federal, state, and institutional healthcare standards
- Follow standards set by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Healthcare (AAAHC) and American Correctional Association (ACA)
- Report inmate rule violations or safety concerns to the Health Services Administrator or COR
- Perform additional dental assistant duties as assigned by the Dentist, within scope of practice
- Services are performed onsite within a high-security federal correctional facility
- Frequent and unsupervised contact with inmate populations
- Work disruptions may occur due to lockdowns, weather, or security issues
- All equipment, PPE, and routine supplies are provided by the institution
- Professional scrubs are required (scrub pants, top, and optional jacket)
- Formal training as a Dental Assistant AND
- Minimum of two (2) years documented experience
, OR - Current Dental Assistant certification
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS / CPR) certification (no lapse permitted)
- Ability to obtain and maintain institutional clearance
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse populations
- Must provide resume and documentation of education, training, and certifications
If certified, the Dental Assistant must maintain all required continuing education and provide updated certifications to the COR as required.
Restrictions- The Dental Assistant may NOT
: - Supervise inmates or Bureau of Prisons staff
- Participate in inmate accountability
- Requisition, sign for, or pick up supplies
- Develop policy or procedures
- Attend staff meetings, recalls, or staff functions
- Must be free from infectious diseases
- Any condition posing a risk to patients, staff, or inmates must be immediately reported
- Contractor is responsible for replacement staffing if removal is required
