We’re the voice of the Council, ensuring clear, timely, and engaging communication with our communities. Our team works collaboratively to manage media relationships, protect the Council’s reputation, and deliver content that informs and inspires.
About the role | Ko te mahi neiAs a News & Media Advisor, you’ll be at the forefront of media engagement for Christchurch City Council. Your mahi will include:
- Managing media enquiries and providing strategic advice to senior leaders and elected members.
- Creating and publishing compelling news and social media content across multiple platforms.
- Developing media plans for key Council activities and monitoring engagement outcomes.
- Managing the Mayor’s media requests and social media presence.
- Identifying emerging issues early and mitigating reputational risk.
This is a dynamic role where no two days are the same - you’ll be shaping how our city is represented in the media and online.
You’ll bring:
- A tertiary qualification in communications, politics, or a related field.
- At least 5 years’ experience as a journalist or in a similar media role.
- Proven expertise in digital content creation and social media management.
- Strong relationship-building skills and political acumen.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
- A current NZ driver’s licence.

- Location - This position is primarily based at Te Hononga, Christchurch City Council Civic Offices - 53 Hereford Street
- Salary - The salary band for this position goes from $88,003 to $97,781 per annum based on a 40 hour week. Starting salaries will be based on knowledge, skills and experience the successful candidate brings to the role, and relativities both, within the immediate team and in the broader organisation for the same or similar roles.
