Position Summary
The Inpatient Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner is an essential member of a multidisciplinary team caring for individuals admitted to involuntary psychiatric or withdrawal management services. The position is responsible for initial evaluations and ongoing medical management of psychiatric illnesses and substance withdrawal as appropriate. The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner provides team leadership and participates in the ITA (Involuntary Treatment Act) legal process as needed.

• Provide initial psychiatric evaluations to clients admitted to involuntary psychiatric services within state-mandated time frame.
• Formulate and document diagnostic assessments of admitted clients.
• Contribute medical/pharmacologic elements to clients’ individualized treatment plans and participate in multidisciplinary treatment planning.
• Provide and document ongoing psychiatric assessments throughout episodes of inpatient treatment.
• Provide medical/pharmacologic management of clients’ psychiatric conditions.
• Provide appropriate assessment, orders, and documentation of any required emergency treatment, seclusion, or restraints.
• Provide medical/clinical support to the nursing team as requested.
• Order and interpret diagnostic tests as appropriate.
• Utilize medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for substance use disorders, including naltrexone and buprenorphine when appropriate.
• Consult with general medical providers as needed.
• Communicate with client families and outpatient treatment providers as needed as part of diagnostic assessment, treatment formulation, and to ensure continuity of care.
• Participate in involuntary treatment-related legal proceedings as needed.
• Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings.
• Provide on-call/after-hours coverage; for 1.0 FTE, requirements are 2 weekend/holiday day shifts and 7 night shifts of phone coverage per month (extra compensation beyond minimum required shifts).
• Maintain licensure, board certification and continuing education as per community standards and state/federal requirements.
• Adhere to agency policies and procedures, and learn and adhere to Joint Commission, federal, state and local requirements as is the agency standard.
• Other duties as assigned.

• Graduation from an accredited school or program.
• PMHNP certification through the ANCC.
• Licensed to practice under state WAC and RCW.
• Pass required background checks.
• Maintains a BLS.

• Ability to work independently including making acute treatment and referral decisions.
• Ability to function as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Competence with electronic health record documentation.
• Possession of a DEA “X” waiver to prescribe buprenorphine preferred – must obtain within 3 months of hire.

Work is performed inside and outside in varying temperatures. Employee may occasionally be required to push or lift to 25 pounds. May be exposed to office supply odors or vapors. Employee is sitting most of the time and is also required to stand, walk, type, bend, write, read, interpret, and explain complex issues and speak on the telephone.
