Position: Carpenter II - Foreman (Special Duty Assignment)

Special Duty Assignments (SDA) are only open to active, Career Service King County employees. This assignment is currently approved to last 3 months.

The King County's Facilities Management Division (FMD), Building Services Section, is looking for an experienced and responsible Carpenter II (Carpenter Foreman) to serve in a Special Duty Assignment (SDA). The Carpenter Foreman will perform supervisory responsibilities including assigning, monitoring and evaluating the work of journey-level Carpenters. This position will also be responsible for scheduling, coordinating and planning the work for the unit;

preparing cost estimates for labor and materials.

Through a workforce of over 300 dedicated employees, the FMD operates and manages the County's capital assets by developing and maintaining cost-conscious, sustainable, high-quality facilities, and environments. The Building Services Section of FMD maintains approximately 3 million square feet in facilities where King County provides regional services, including the King County Courthouse and District Courts, Maleng Regional Justice Center, King County Administration Building, King County Animal Shelter, and several Public Health facilities.

Our facilities range in age from 8 to 100 years, with equipment such as boilers, chillers, DDC controls, ventilation fans, pumps and compressors, and fire/life/safety systems.

The successful candidate will demonstrate skill and/or ability at a minimum to:
  • Model best practices in supervising Carpenters including:
    • Plan, organize, schedule, and coordinate daily work activities of assigned work unit; prepare work schedules and staffing plans; evaluate and monitor work quality and quantity;
    • Provide input and/or prepare performance feedback for subordinates; investigate and address performance and conduct issues in a timely and appropriate manner. May participate in discussions regarding disciplinary actions with higher level supervisor.
    • Monitor for safety hazards and unsafe personnel practices; recommend corrective actions as appropriate;
    • Foster a model of every employee being accountable for high-quality service delivery.
  • Maintain accurate personnel, building and vendor files, and records on projects.
  • Monitor and track material and labor expenditures.
  • Organize and file owner equipment manuals for ongoing reference.
  • Utilize and monitor the computerized maintenance management and timekeeping systems. This includes:
    • Inputting detailed data
    • Verifying accuracy of inputted data
    • Closing out work orders
    • Approving hours
    • Correcting errors
    • Training staff on the systems
    • Escalating any issues that arise
  • Analyze, troubleshoot, and develop resolutions for maintenance issues.
  • Estimate material and labor, equipment rental charges, permit fees, and subcontractor costs for various disciplines within pre‑determined project scope.
  • Review project specifications and drawings for material standards and constructability.
  • Collaborate with Planners, Project Managers, clients, and other trade groups to schedule and complete work orders.
  • Provide excellent customer service to all internal and external customers.
  • Perform the duties of a Carpenter I, as needed.
