Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), Hand and Wrist Clinic - Kent, OH (Healthcare)

The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) is an Orthopedic Medical Assistant responsible for assisting Physicians and/or Advanced Practice Providers in the clinic setting. Duties include rooming patients, obtaining medical histories, completing thorough documentation in EMR, preparation of injections, front desk phone calls, assisting with procedures, including the application and removal of casts and the fitting and educational use of Durable Medical Equipment (DME).

Assists in general maintenance of equipment, supplies, and exam rooms.

• Utilizes medical skills to provide support to patients and health care staff under the supervision of a licensed provider or nurse.
• Prepares EMR for new patients and ensures proper patient forms are complete, current, and entered into the computer.
• Checks EMR for progress notes and stat orders, prepares charge tickets, and acts on stat orders.
• Runs charge tickets and patient-specific forms; updates health maintenance at each visit; identifies medication changes and updates allergy information.
• Initiates radiology order entry for physician to sign.
• Monitors and communicates changes in patient condition to a licensed provider or nurse; gathers information for outside testing if required.
• Obtains authorizations from insurance companies for testing and injections.
• Provides back-up coverage and assists in daily office routine in other areas as needed.
• Monitors patient waiting area and maintains office equipment; orders office supplies and orthopedic/medical equipment and supplies.
• Cleans, sterilizes, stocks/maintains examination rooms and equipment; maintains cleanliness of clinical areas and exam rooms; restocks and orders supplies within budgetary constraints; reports needs for repair or maintenance to manager.
• Assists physicians and/or physician assistants with special procedures; gathers equipment, positions patient, and responds to physician or mid-level provider instructions.
• Prepares laboratory requisitions and arranges transport of specimens to laboratory; removal of sutures, staples, dressings and wraps; application and removal of casts and splints.
• Provides proper application and patient education on DME; prepares and draws up injections; collects data and instructional materials for discharged patients; ensures follow-up appointment times and locations are clear; provides patient education on plan of care.
• Ensures charge tickets are marked appropriately for injections and/or equipment and supplies are given to the patient; attends in-services and departmental meetings.
• All other duties not specifically assigned.

• Education: Graduate of a recognized Medical Assistant Program. In lieu of Medical Assisting education, minimum of 15 years of direct patient care in a clinical setting.
• Experience: 1 to 2 years of demonstrated experience as a Medical Assistant preferred.
• Certifications/Licenses/Registrations: Current Certification as a Medical Assistant required within 6 months of hire. Preferred associations and certifications:
  American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) CMA, American Medical Technologists (AMT) RMA, and National Health career Association (NHA) CCMA. BLS required within 3 months of hire.
