This position will involve working with and supervising students with Autism who have significant special needs in the general education and special education settings. The para educator will work as a team with the special education teacher, other para educators, and specialists, providing educational instruction and maintaining documentation to monitor student progress. The role also includes all duties within the scope of Kennewick School District policies and procedures and additional assigned tasks.
Conditionsof Employment
- Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Must have an AA degree, 72 quarter college credits, 48 semester college credits, or a passing score on the ETS test.
- Must attach an unofficial transcript proving the AA degree or equivalent; official transcripts required within 30 days of hire.
- Must be able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Must meet the physical demands of the position.
- Must pass a basic skills test.
- Complete Safe Schools Web‑Based Training within 30 days of hire and annually thereafter.
- Must pass a background check, including employee‑paid fingerprinting.
- Obtain CPI Level I and II training at the next available opportunity.
- Maintain adherence to board policies and administrative procedures.
- Implement safety precautions for students, equipment, and facilities.
- Attend required in‑service trainings and meetings.
- Demonstrate ability to address safety concerns effectively.
- Build cooperative, respectful relationships with students, parents, staff, and management.
- Approach assigned work professionally, aiming for teamwork, pride in service, and continuous improvement.
- Command the English language proficiently in verbal and written communication with all stakeholders.
- Use basic computer programs for record‑keeping, time cards, and email.
- Be first‑aid certified or willing to acquire certification promptly.
- Physically supervise Tier II Autism and general education students during recess, PE, and music classes.
- Proficiency in word processing and computer use.
- Successful experience working with students with Autism.
- Knowledge of instructional and behavioral management programs.
- Experience with intervention procedures and data collection.
- Ability to model consistent intervention behaviors.
- Patience, calmness, and warmth in crisis situations.
- Awareness of multiple student activities and rapid, sound decision‑making.
- Maintain ongoing documentation of student IEP goals and objectives.
- Physical ability to hold and/or restrain students using CPI techniques.
- Positive performance evaluations and recommendations.
- Excellent attendance, punctuality, dependability, and self‑discipline.
- Experience in “team teaching” situations.
- Demonstrate flexibility, diplomacy, and composure in unpredictable situations; communicate effectively with diverse individuals.
- Provide direct support to special education students in the Tier II Autism program.
- Address physical/health needs of students as required.
- Assist teachers with clerical and instructional tasks.
- Collect and record data for student progress.
- Implement prescribed behavioral intervention strategies.
- Supervise and control students to promote a safe, orderly, positive learning climate.
- Complete required paperwork with accuracy to maintain compliance with state and district regulations.
- Assist specialists (P.E., Music, Library) in supervising special education students as needed.
- Supervise students during recess times.
- Maintain regular attendance and punctuality; perform other duties as assigned.
- Mobility: Stand and walk for prolonged periods, push or pull up to 50 lbs., sit, kneel, crouch, twist and bend, type, and use hands for various tasks.
