Laboratory Manager – Kelso, Washington (Onsite)

About

The Role

The Laboratory Manager will be responsible for the sustainable financial and commercial performance of the nominated business. They will lead strategic and business planning and the execution of those plans. The Laboratory Manager will also ensure the business meets all local, federal government, and ALS government compliance and requirement standards.

Responsibilities Position Duties and Scope
  • Management of Environmental laboratory, plus any regional service centers
  • Align the business to the ALS purpose;
    Science, Assurance, Sustainability.
  • Align the business to the company’s core values:

  • Align the business to the ALS strategic themes, client centricity, growth, innovation and technology, and ALS way.

  • Participate in the formulation of regional strategy and business plans.
  • Strategic and business planning for the business unit.
  • Ensure the business executes on the strategic plan and business plan objectives to achieve targets.
Financial
  • Align with a low-to-cost product positioning strategy.
  • Achieve budgeted financial performance and sustained profitable growth.
  • Prepare annual budgets.
  • Manage CAPEX and OPEX to meet business needs.
  • Control costs, labour, and operational performance of the business unit.
  • Manage debt collection and cash conversion.
  • Final approval of accounts payable.
Client Focus
  • Support the ALS brand position of technical leadership in the market.
  • Develop and maintain client relationships.
  • Manage turnaround time performance and client service.
  • Provide timely and high-quality service to clients.
  • Develop a client service culture that supports high levels of client retention and market share.
  • Develop and execute a sales & marketing strategy that targets new client acquisition.
  • Develop and execute a business development strategy that positions the business for high levels of performance and growth.
  • Develop and implement a pricing strategy that facilitates business goals.
  • Manage formal client feedback mechanisms – NPS and/or client survey.
Managing People
  • Build trust within the team.
  • Takes ownership of business-critical initiatives.
  • Ensure the staff structure and capabilities can facilitate current and future business needs, including succession planning.
  • Lead a framework for staff engagement, development, and learning.
  • Hold staff accountable for outcomes.
  • Develop staff to meet current and future business needs.
  • Plan succession to support the continuing success of the business.
  • Manage the Performance Management Review framework and fulfilment of its goals.
  • Ensure direct reports possess suitable skills and training for their roles, including mentoring.
  • Ensure appropriate human resources management practices are developed and maintained.
Quality, Safety and ESG
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and ALS policy requirements for governance.
  • Observe legislative and best practice compliance issues.
  • Adhere to the ethical and compliance requirements of the ALS Limited brand and all associated policies.
  • Maintain the quality of data produced and the methodology used at a level that meets or exceeds company and market standards (ISO
    17025, NELAC, etc.).
  • Ensure the integrity of the laboratory’s quality system is maintained and further developed.
  • Assess the results of quality audits and client complaints and implement improvements as required.
  • Foster a working environment that increases quality, safety, productivity, and efficiency through upgrading technologies, methodologies, and innovative processes.
  • Manage and support the development of a diverse workforce.
  • Align and support ALS’ carbon reduction strategy.
